Yaser Kasim joins the Wings!
Welling United are delighted to confirm the arrival of Iraq international midfielder, Yaser Kasim.
The 31-year old arrives at Park View Road with a wealth of EFL and international experience having wracked up 150 appearances during his time in League football, while representing his country on 21 occasions.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Kasim said: “It feels good to be here. I’m really hungry to do well and I want to bring my experience into the training ground and onto the pitch.
“I want to be a positive influence around the squad. I’m a thinking player, I like to get onto the pitch, control the game, dominate it and go home with the win.”
Meanwhile, Warren Feeney was pleased to strengthen his squad with a player of Kasim’s pedigree: “He’s a fantastic player. We’re very lucky to get him and we’re absolutely delighted. He’s a player who can open teams up, he’s a great player who’s played at a great level and is an international so he has great pedigree.
“If good players become available, we want to bring them in. He’s hungry and we’re delighted to have him.”
Baghdad-born Kasim spent time as a youth with Tottenham Hotspur’s U18s before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2010. Having made one league appearance with the Seagulls, he enjoyed loan spells at Luton Town and Macclesfield Town before joining Swindon Town permanently in 2013.
He spent four seasons in League One at the County Ground, netting eight goals in 139 appearances for the Robins, including a start at Wembley in their 2015 League One play-off final defeat to Preston North End.
A move to Northampton Town followed in 2017, before leaving for the Swedish top flight with Örebro SK in January 2019 prior to a move back to Iraq with Erbil and then Zakho before returning to England this summer.
Kasim made his debut for the Wings in a cameo appearance off the bench during Saturday’s clash with St Albans City at Park View Road.
