New arrival Will Wood is excited for the challenge ahead after becoming the Wings’ first signing of the summer ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Despite the disappointment of relegation on the final day of the season with former club Dulwich Hamlet, the 26-year-old is eager to prove himself as one of the best in the division next term as he looks to enjoy his football again with Welling.

“Obviously, it wasn’t a great end at Dulwich last year, but I feel like this is a good, new challenge for me,” explained Wood.

“I spoke to the club last season and very nearly came then, so it’s good to finally get it done. I’m looking forward to it.

“You always want to improve and strive for better and, for me personally, I want to make my mark in the league this year and be able to say I’m one of the best in my position in the league.

“Hopefully, that comes with lots of wins, getting up the table and just having a good enjoyable year.

“Last year, there wasn’t too much to enjoy for me. I want to get back to enjoying football and give the fans watching something to cheer about because that’s important. If they’re happy, it resonates down to the pitch.”

The left-back has always left a good impression when playing at Park View Road, netting twice against the Wings in recent seasons, including in the meeting with Dulwich back in January.

And Wood is hoping that bodes well for his time in DA16 when he dons the red of Welling.

“I know it sounds mad, but I’ve always done well playing against Welling!” He said.

“Ive played there three times and scored twice! It was a good atmosphere last season and had some good banter with the fans so I’m looking to coming back there.”

“I’m a steady player, always committed and chip in with a few goals here and there,” he added. “I’m more of a ball player, but I can also do the nasty side as well and can do both if needs be. I like to get forward as much as I can.

“I’m just really looking forward to getting started.”

Early-bird season tickets for the 2023/24 campaign are now on sale with prices frozen until June 5th ahead of the new season as the club celebrates its 60th anniversary.
