Welling United 4-2 Tonbridge Angels

Welling made it four points from the Bank Holiday weekend period with a solid performance in sweltering conditions at Park View Road as they overcame newly promoted Tonbridge Angels.

The Wings nearly went ahead in the opening minutes Adam Coombes having a powerful free kick pushed away by Former Welling loanee Jonathan Henly.

Welling were looking sharp and Anthony Cook saw his shot tipped over by Henly following a sublime move. Gavin McCallum then headed over a Cook free kick.

Welling went ahead in the 27th minute Adam Coombes done well to disposes the ball inside the Angels half before powering forward. He slid a perfectly weighted ball through to Bradley Goldberg who took a touch before slotting home for another well taken goal.

Sonny Miles had a free kick in a dangerous area but he sent his free kick over the bar and out of the ground as Welling went on to increase the lead.

Cook laid the ball into the feet of Goldberg in the area and some quick feet in the box presented him with a goal scoring opportunity as he powerfully smashed the ball into the roof of the net for his 3rd goal in two games.

The away side did pulled a goal back with 5 minutes until half as Yusuff prodded home a free kick at the back post to give the away side hope.

However deep into first half injury time Welling regained their two goal advantage. Cook whipped in a deep free kick that Gavin McCallum met at the far post to power home.

Into the second half and McCallum played in Cook down the wing as the former Dulwich man cut in hit a dangerous cross shot that Henly did well to claim.

Coombes then saw Henly save a fierce effort which was heading in.

Tonbridge huffed and puffed trying to get back into the game Yusuff hit a a free kick over, but it was Welling who grabbed the next goal to make it four. Cook regained the ball in the midfield before surging forward as he created space for a shot and let rip from 25 yards out which flew in, his first goal in a Welling shirt which he enjoyed.

Welling then had the luxury of making changes as subs Joshua Oyinsan and Aaron Cosgrave both went close.

However it was the away side who grabbed their 2nd of the game. The impressive D’Sean Theobalds tricking his way past the Wings defence before slotting home. They almost grabbed a third when Alex Bentley just curled wide when well placed which would have set a few nerves off in the Welling camp. But as it was Cosgrave almost added a 5th but Henly kept him out as Welling saw out the additional 5 minutes in the August heat.

The relentless schedule continues as Wings face a third consecutive away trip on the spin to Essex, this time Concord Rangers the destination.
