
Welling United 2-0 Hemel Hempstead
Welling continued their recent good home form with a good win against play off chasing Hemel Hempstead.
The game itself changed in the 25th minute when Sam Ashford made a wild lunge on Connor Dymond and was shown a straight red card. Welling took full advantage of the one man advantage to run out winners.
Hemel started brightly and Luke Howell headed over Jake Howells’ corner.
Alex Wall hit a low free kick straight at Dan Wilks. A clever corner from Skipper for the day Anthony Cook found Jay Rich-Baghuelou who hit a volley but Sam Ashford blocked his effort.
Then came to the sending off as Ashford made a dangerous tackle on Connor Dymond and the Hemel man was shown a straight red.
Welling began to see a lot more of the ball but they struggled to create chances. However with just 5 minutes to the break they finally made the breakthrough. Cook won a free kick in a dangerous position and his inch perfect free kick found Moses Emmanuel at the back post and he powerfully headed past Beasant.
Alex Wall hit a low effort straight at Wilks with the second half not even a minute old. A clever move between Bradley Goldberg and Adam Coombes saw Goldberg create space for a shot but Sam Beasant stood tall and made a great save.
Hemel has a great chance when Ricardo German best the offside trap after being played in by Wall but Wilks made a crucial save.
A loose ball was picked up by Cook who smashed a half volleyed just wide of the near post. Welling then had a glorious chance to double the lead. A lovely move on the edge of the area, found Aaron Cosgrave and he took a touch before dragging his effort just wide with Beasant a spectator.
Dickenson found the side netting for Hemel as they went in search of an equaliser.
But with four minutes left, Welling made the game safe, Cook so was having a fine game, produced another dangerous corner and this time, Nathan Green was on hand to tap home at the back post.
Hemel almost scored a consolation at the end but German shot wide as Welling claimed a big three points.
Next Saturday Welling take a break from the league as they make the long trip South West to face Yeovil Town in the FA Trophy.
