Welling bowed out of The FA Trophy at the first hurdle after a toothless display against Oxford City at PVR on Tuesday.
Lewis Hobbs made a good block to deny an early Elliott Benyon effort before Joe Oastler hit an effort over the bar after a corner fell kindly to him.
Josh Ashby had a shot saved by Reise Charles-Cook before Welling finally came into the game and had a good twenty minute spell. Lionel Ainsworth produced an excellent shot on the turn to bring a smart save out of Ben Dudzinski. Matt Everitt then shot from range, but it was well saved.
An Ainsworth corner was cleared as far as Brad Ryan, who was a bright spark in an otherwise disappointing night. shot just over. Shortly after Oxford took the lead a great piece of individual play from Nana Owusu down the left wing saw him cut in before arrowing an effort past Cook.
It was almost two just before the break, Owusu forcing Charles-Cook into a stunning save from a free kick.
Into the 2nd half Dipo Akinyemi headed wide from Everitt’s cross before Bradley Ryan had a low save easily saved.
Oxford added a 2nd in the 57th minute and it was from a corner once again. Owusu tapping home unmarked from close range.
After that the game petered out with Oxford happy to sit on their lead as Welling struggled to muster many chnaces Kareem Isiaka glanicng a Nathan Green but Dudzinski was able to save..
Welling now turn their full attention to escaping the relegation positions with a tough home game on Tuesday when they host Havant and Waterlooville at PVR behind closed doors.
