Vanarama Stat Attack: the facts behind what the start to the season really means!
League sponsors Vanarama offer some answers about the actual importance of the first seven weeks
The first seven weeks of the season can tell us quite a lot – but it can also pull the wool over our eyes!
We’re a quarter of the way into the Vanarama National League South campaign already, but is it still too soon to make judgements or is the division now starting to take shape?
We have now passed the quarter of the season mark but how have Welling begun in years gone by?
The Wings are of course hoping history repeats itself, last year’s third place finish was the highest for a number of years – the side ended September in the same slot and went on to reach the Promotion Final.
The year before they were 10th at this stage. They ended in 11th, not quite enough to throw themselves into the play-off picture.
There was an upward surge in 2016-17. It was a slow start as they side won just twice in their first 11 matches and sat in 19th but things improved and they finished in 16th.
But does the first two months actually matter in the grand scheme of things? We’ve also been looking back to how the table appeared at this point last season – and it seems not.
Torquay United were nowhere to be seen at the 11-game stage last season, the champions-to-be were marooned in 13th place before Gary Johnson came to their rescue.
Leading the way this time last year were Billericay Town, that offered false hope to those in Essex who bought into their owner’s close season statement which declared they would not only win promotion but do it as champions. They ultimately failed to make the play-offs.
Welling fans will think there’s plenty more to come with the trip to Hungerford, after the FA Cup game at Chipstead, looking to start the rise.
