St Albans City 1-2 Welling United

Welling United made it three wins in a row with a hard fought win at St Albans City. A second consecutive Saturday on the road brought about another valuable 3 points for Bradley Quinton’s men.

The Wings should have been ahead within the 1st minute Aaron Cosgrave took advantage of a defensive slip before rounding the goalkeeper but the ball bobbled and meant he wasn’t able to get a clean connection as the ball went wide.

Joe Iaciofano then dragged an effort wide for the hosts.

A smart ball from Bradley Goldberg to Diaz Wright saw the loanee shoot over.

Cameron James picked a ball out for Goldberg who did well to control but he was just unable to get his shot away and Dean Snedker was able to claim.

Laciofano was played in but curled over from the angle.

Dipo Akinyemi had a goal bound header deflect off of Munashe Sundire and over for a corner. From the resulting corner Welling took the lead Cook swung in the corner, St. Albans didn’t clear their lines and the ball fell perfectly to Akinyemi who fired confidently passed Snedker and a player on the line.

David Noble saw a free kick go wide as St Albans tried to rally. Akinyemi then tested Snedker from range.

Into the second half needing to up the tempo St Albans started well, Scott Shulton shooting wide early on.

Welling almost grabbed a 2nd when Bradley Goldberg played a ball across the face of goal and Harold Joseph was inches from converting with an outstretched leg.

However Welling scored a second with their next attack. The Wings turned defence into attack and the ball was played to Akinyemi who looking for options strode forward cut inside before smashing an effort from range that took a slight deflection and sent it flying past Snedker.

Just three minutes later, St Albans were handed a lifeline a defensive header out was misplaced and fell kindly to Iaciofano and he was in the right place to turn the ball home past Wilks.

Welling went in search of restoring the two goal lead and Snedker produced a smart save from Korrey Henry after being played in by Wright.

Snedker produced an even better save when denying Goldberg before a goalmouth scramble he palmed away a header from Akinyemi.

St Albans almost grabbed an unlikely point but Dan Wilks was equal to a low effort from Jefferson Louis and ensured Welling came away with the three points. Welling return to PVR next week as 2nd place Slough Town visit.
