10-man Welling United fell to defeat at the hands of Weymouth at Park View Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Wings went ahead through Stefan Payne early in the first half, but were pegged back by a Terras leveller, before the visitors bagged their second in the second half.

And when goalkeeper Myles Roberts was sent off for colliding with a Weymouth forward outside of his box, there was no way back for the home side.

The first opening of the afternoon came the way of the away side as Keelan O’Connell dragged a shot wide from a god position, but it was Welling who took a 14th minute lead through Payne.

The hosts worked it wonderfully-well down the left-hand side, resulting in Chi Ezennolim providing the cross for Payne to poke home a clever finish into the bottom right-hand corner.

Moments later, Payne came close to a second when he sent a stinging volley towards goal, forcing Zaki Oulah into a save at his near post.

Yaser Kasim also did well to win possession and try his luck with an effort which hit the side-netting, before Weymouth started to find a foothold on the game.

Myles Roberts produced a fine save on the half-hour mark to keep out Tom Blair’s free-kick, but it was not long before the Terras were level from the resulting corner.

Brendan Wilson got his head on the right-sided delivery, beating Roberts to make it 1-1.

Roberts was called into action shortly after to make an outstanding stop to push Blair’s effort onto the bar and over, while Welling could well have gone into the lead at the break when Taylor Maloney placed a shot inches past the upright.

The Wings had the ball in the net early in the second half through Payne, but the celebrations were cut short when the referee pulled the game back for a handball in the build-up.

Just before the hour, Roberts was at full stretch again to keep out a vicious Luke Nippard volley, but he would be beaten in the 68th minute when the visitors went ahead – Akheem Rose given far too much space in the box to sweep a shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

With 18 minutes remaining, Welling’s task became tougher when Roberts was shown a straight red card after rushing out of his goal and colliding with a Weymouth player.

Welling embarked on a push for a leveller but were left frustrated. Payne dragged wide from a decent position, while Maloney rattled the crossbar with a belting effort from 25 yards in the 90th minute, but it wasn’t to be as the Wings suffered their first defeat in five in all competitions.
