Welling United suffered a defeat at the death at the hands of Farnborough at Park View Road on Tuesday evening.

The Wings were second best for much of the game as they fell behind in the first half, but finally got a foothold late on when Stefan Payne netted a leveller.

And despite their confident play in the latter part of the match, they were dealt a sucker punch deep in injury time when Farnborough smashed in a winner to leave the hosts dejected.

A difficult first half of football saw the Wings struggle to get on top. Former Charlton Athletic midfielder Ricky Holmes registered the first effort of the evening for the visitors as he stung the palms of Kai McKenzie-Lyle at his near post before Farnborough took the lead in the 27th minute from a set-piece.

A corner delivery was knocked back towards the far post where Hisham Kasimu was on hand to head towards goal. And although it looked as if McKenzie-Lyle had got down well to make the save, the linesman waved his flag to signal that he believed the ball had already crossed the line, thus awarding the goal.

In truth, the hosts offered very little in the first 45, with their best passage of coming down the right midway through the half when Antony Papadopoulos and Rob Howard combined well before the formers’ effort was eventually snuffed out from a tight angle.

Welling’s frustrations continued after the restart as the away side continued to control proceedings.

McKenzie-Lyle was called into action as he got behind a pair of shots from distance, while the ‘keeper also clawed a deep cross out from underneath the crossbar which could very well has sneaked in.

But just when it looked like the Wings may go out with a whimper, they sprung into life late on, just as they did at Bath City four days earlier.

On 78 minutes, Yaser Kasim’s shot from distance dipped and swerved, forcing Jack Turner to spill his save straight into the path of Payne who prodded home the leveller.

With that, Welling had their tails up and started to look the more likely to take all three points.

Immediately after the equaliser, Payne came close again as Taylor Maloney nodded Amadou Kassarate’s deep, looping cross towards the near post, where he headed over from close range.

Shortly after, Chi Ezennolim’s low and dangerous ball in flashed across the face of goal, but there wasn’t a red shirt who could find that killer touch.

Heartbreakingly, the visitors would prove to be the victors, bagging the winner with almost the last kick of the game, deep into injury time and against the run of play.

A cross from the left was cleared to the edge of the box as far as Olly Pendlebury who took a touch and sent an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net to send his side into raptures as Farnborough take the points home to Hampshire.

The Wings will now have to pick themselves up and prepare for another match on home turf on Saturday with Taunton Town the visitors.
