Welling United came away from Farnborough with a hard-fought point at the Easy as HGV Stadium on Tuesday evening.
After being under pressure for much of the first half, the Wings came out swinging after the break, putting in an excellent performance on their way to a clean sheet.
Indeed, Myles Roberts proved to be the hero, keeping out a controversially-awarded penalty in the dying minutes to keep the score goalless.
The home side dominated much of the first period, looking threatening going forwards and coming inches away from an impressive opener with the Wings saved by the woodwork, while Myles Roberts pulled off some trademark saves.
The Welling stopper pulled off a great point-blank save early on to deny Swindon Town loanee Harry Parson’s header, although the linesman flag was up regardless.
Parsons was proving to be a threat in the opening exchanges and he blazed over from a good position on 16 minutes after getting into the box from the right, while Roberts was called into action shortly after to first keep out Ricky Holmes’ tricky bouncing free-kick, before rushing out brilliantly to smother Jordan Norville-Williams’ effort after he had robbed Jamie Sendles-White to get into a threatening position.
The crossbar was left rattling just after the half-hour mark when Farnborough skipper Kevin Lokko took down a deep cross on his chest before sending an acrobatic volley crashing back off the underside of the bar, much to the relief of the Wings.
Although the latter stages of the half did see Welling get a better foothold on the game, their only eye of goal came when Stefan Payne tried his luck with a shot from distance was well wide.
Welling suffered an injury blow early in the second half as Ade Azeez went down off the ball, forcing him off with Aaron Barnes his replacement as the Wings shifted to 4-4-2 with Barnes taking up a position on the right of midfield.
Shortly after that switch, the visitors enjoyed a spell of pressure with chances suddenly starting to flow.
First, Antony Papadopoulos played in Payne with a neat through-ball with the forward poking over under pressure from the on-rushing goalkeeper.
And moments later, Payne was in again, this time forcing Jack Turner into a save one-on-one from a tight angle.
The Wings had their tails up and came close again on 57 minutes when Papadopoulos controlled well in the box before turning and seeing his shot well blocked by a desperate yellow shirt and, two minutes later, Welling came closer still with Barnes firing inches past the post with a low shot from 25 yards.
The second-half showing was in stark contrast to that of the first and the Wings continued to dominate possession as they looked the more likely.
Barnes headed over from a Chi Ezennolim cross with 16 minutes remaining, but a controversial moment with 10 minutes left looked like it may have cost Welling when the home side were awarded a penalty.
With Selim Saied running towards the box, he received a push from Barnes which looked to be outside penalty areas. Despite that, the referee pointed to the spot and, after lengthy discussion with the assistant on the far side, Norville-Williams stepped up, only to see his spot-kick superbly save by Roberts who dived to his right.
Welling goal was somewhat under siege as the clock ran down, but Warren Feeney’s men defended manfully and were fully-deserving of their point come the full-time whistle.
