Welling United kick off 2023 with the return fixture against Kent neighbours Tonbridge Angels at Park View Road on New Year’s Day (3pm).

The Wings go the better of the Angels on Boxing Day as Ade Azeez bagged the only goal in a 1-0 victory at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium and Warren Feeney’s men will be hoping for to repeat the feat to make it six points from their two games over the festive period.

That victory on Monday thrust Welling back into the top half of the table, two places below Tonbridge who sit in 10th who have played two games more.

A win for the Wings on Sunday would put them one point behind their opponents.

THE OPPOSITION
Tonbridge come into the game off the back of back-to-back defeats having, of course, been defeated by the Wings on Boxing Day, while a heavy 5-0 defeat at the hands of Weymouth came before on December 10th.

Jay Saunders’ side have won 10, drawn three and lost 11 of their 24 games, so far.

Their form away from home has been middling, with five wins, six defeats and a single draw under their belts from their 12 games on the road.

PRE-MATCH CHAT
Warren Feeney: “We won’t get carried away after Boxing Day. It’s one win, hopefully we can build on it and take the confidence, but keep our feet on the ground.

“The second game will probably be tougher, we’ll have to back it up and they’ll be looking for a response.”

Tonbridge Angels boss, Jay Saunders: “We huffed and puffed and were good in large parts of the game on Boxing Day, but we just came up short. We put in a good performance against a side that were expected to be up there this season and we put in a good performance against them, so we’ll take the positives moving into New Year’s Day.

REF WATCH
Robert Claussen will take charge of the first game of 2023. He has refereed 12 games, so far, this term and last officiated the Wings for the 4-1 defeat at Braintree Town in October.

He will be assisted by Howard Collins and Teddy Osborn.
