MANarama’s September assessment: Welling’s month dissected – and what October could hold!
League sponsors Vanarama hope you will get involved as MANarama makes a very big return!
Welling United
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly…
After a tough start to the month, the Wings started to show shoots of recovery towards the end although defeats to pacesetting Wealdstone and Weymouth didn’t set alarm bells ringing. A seven-goal thumping of Chipstead in the FA Cup perked everyone up and a win against Hungerford ended the month on a high – happy days!
What about the others in September?
Leaders Wealdstone may have ended September on top with a five-point advantage, but the team of the month were actually Slough Town – the Rebels enjoyed four straight Vanarama National League South wins in a row and cup romp. Weymouth, Dorking and Braintree all took ten points from their four matches, while Hemel won three of theirs.
The high point?
The FA Cup can sometimes be an unnecessary distraction if you desperately want to rectify your league form. But blitzing Chipstead in front of the home fans will have done wonders for the mood around the place.
Star man…
There might not have been too much to shout about for Wings fans this month, but Anthony Cook’s performances have got tongues wagging.
From the dug-out….
Mark Goldberg described their win at Hungerford as a “crucial result” after he felt his side “haven’t got what they play has warranted in recent games.”
How do things compare to last September?
It was three wins and a draw from their four league games – Oxford, East Thurrock and Bath City were all victims of a ruthless Welling side. FA Cup progression was also secured against Chesham.
What does October look like?
Two home games against two of the bottom four sides might have Mark rubbing his hands together – St Albans City and Hampton are in town either side of a trip to in-form Slough Town. It’s the FA Cup up first though against Tavistock.
