King seals triple swoop + Coombes departs

Adam Coombes has today left Welling United to join Vanarama National South side Billericay Town for an undisclosed fee. Following Billericay’s approach the player was informed and indicated he’d like to discuss the move with Billericay so it was in the club’s best interests for a deal to be agreed. Coombes leaves after two spells at PVR, scoring over 30 goals in his first spell during the 2016/17 before moving to Sutton United. He returned late last season but injury restricted him to a handful of appearances as the Wings’ playoff hopes faded. The club wishes to thank Adam for all his efforts in a Wings shirt.

Wings boss Steve King has moved fast to fill the void left by Coombes by signing forward Danny Mills from Ebbsfleet United on a season-long loan. The former Whitehawk man enjoyed a prolific spell scoring 58 times in two seasons under King which was part of a five-year spell on the south coast. Mills moved to Ebbsfleet last summer and made a number of appearances in the Vanarama National League before finishing the season at neighbours Dartford. Mills goes straight into the squad for Saturdays friendly against Watford.

On signing for Welling, Mills said:

“Obviously I know the gaffer (King) very well from our time at Whitehawk and I feel that I played my best football under him during our time there, scoring nearly 60 goals during two seasons. Looking at the squad, I know a lot of the boys like JP Kissock, Dave Ijaha and Ach (Anthony Acheampong) from playing with or against them over the years and definitely think that the squad is capable of promotion under the most successful manager at this level. Personally, I’m excited to get playing again after a stop-start season last year and I’ll be looking to play 40-50 games like I’ve done in previous seasons and set 20 goals as a benchmark.”

Also signing for Welling this week is powerful midfielder David Ijaha. Ijaha has featured in midfield in both pre-season games and joins after finishing the 2017/18 campaign with King at Whitehawk.

The midfielder has a wealth of experience at National South level and lists clubs such as St. Albans City, Harrow Borough and Wealdstone as former clubs. Ijaha impressed in his first spell at Whitehawk and earned a move to Plymough Argyle off the back of that fine form only for injury to unfortunately hamper his progress.

Further bolstering the midfield is Guinea-Bissau international Arnaud Mendy. Mendy began his English career at Derby County before spells at Luton, Macclesfield, Lincoln and Whitehawk, where he worked with Wings boss King.
