Hampton & Richmond 2-1 Welling United

The Wings lost back to back games for the first time this season as they once again struggled to adapt to a heavy pitch which towards the end of the game became farcical due to the heavy rain that fell throughout the afternoon.

In the opening exchanges Thierry Audel did well to block Tyrell Miller-Rooney from bursting clear.

Welling kicking up the slope in the first half had a big penalty claim waved away soon after. From a corner the ball clearly hit the hand of a Hampton player in area but referee Jack Packman waved away the appeals. In the same passage of play Josh Hill hit an effort which deflected off the bar.

The game was becoming bitty with the rain getting harder, Chris Dickson saw a shot blocked Brendan Kiernan almost aent McCallum in the clear but goalkeeper Tom Lovelock was on hand to clear.

However right on half time Hampton took the lead. Liam Sole beat McNamara and crossed into the area. It looked to be a simple catch for Wilks but given the wetness on the ball the keeper dropped the ball at the feet of Dickson and he gleefully tapped into the empty net.

After the break Lovelock saved a header from Audel. But Hampton soon got on top

Wilks did well to save an effort from Dickson, but he soon got the better of Wilks for the 2nd time shortly after.

Connors’ corner was not cleared and Dickson produced a clever back heel to put Hampton 2 up.

Hampton were on top clearly enjoying the conditions more so than The Wings Craig Dundas played in Dickson again but Wilks this time denied him.

Daniel Uchechi then shot over when well placed.

Welling made changes and they finally started to come into the game. McNamara crossing for substitute Mills but the striker directed his shot straight at Lovelock who saved.

However Mills did get one back for Welling, Josh Hill pokes the ball forward in a melee and Mills was on hand to prod the ball under Lovelock.

The Wings almost got an unlikely equaliser but in a goalmouth scramble the ball slid just wide. As Hampton held on for the win.

Next Saturday, Welling complete the last of of their three away games at Hemel Hempstead and Manager Steve King will be eager to bring back some points to PVR ahead of the bumper Christmas period.
