Clinical league leaders Wealdstone inflicted defeat on Welling on Saturday. Despite a spirited performance from the home side, The Wings winless run now stretches to 4 games.

It was a Welling display that deserved more but their inability to breakdown the leaders was ultimately their undoing.

Early on Former Wings man Ross Lafayette curled a free kick over the wall from 25 yards but Wilks saved well.

But Welling were soon in there stride and only a stunning save from Wealdstone’s shot stopper Aston Oxborough on loan from Premier league side Norwich City.

A long clearance out of defence sent Lafayette clear but he hit a half volley over. The returning Bradley Goldberg done well to control a long ball before shooting straight at Oxborough. Good play from Cook saw him power forward and hit an
effort that was heading in but Oxborough managed to tip it over. From the resulting corner Adam Coombes saw his glancing header cleared off the line by Efete. New loan signing Theo Widdrington who made an instant impact with the home faithful made space for a shot but his effort went just wide.

Phillips then let fly with an effort for the away side but it rolled wide. Danny Green met a ball on the half volley but his crisp effort sailed just wide.

Widdrington then had another effort blocked for a corner as the game ebbed and flowed. Agyemang did well to sweep away a dangerous ball into the Welling area.

Coombes beat his marker to glance a Cook free kick just wide as the half drew to a close.

Into the 2nd half, Mendy did well bursting past two Welling players only to shoot over from range. A long pass out of defence from Cook found McCallum but as he drove forward he went for glory and he ended up hitting an effort wide.

The Wings came agonisingly close to taking the lead on the hour mark the impressive Theo Widdrington was lurking on the edge of the area for a cut back, which duly arrived from Green. The Rovers loanee took a touch before rifling an effort which had Oxborough beat and with PVR expecting to see the net ripple the ball cannoned back off the post.

It proved pivotal as Wealdstone scored in the 69th minute, a corner was delivered and The Wings defence switched off for a split second allowing Phillips a free header which he guided home despite the best efforts of Wilks and Anderson.

Wealdstone now went in search of a 2nd but Danny Green shot straight at Wilks. However they did double the lead in the 78th minute a smart move played in Dennon Lewis who expertly curled past Wilks.

Welling rallied though and won a penalty with 5 minutes remaining Adam Coombes was adjudged to have been tugged back in the area. Coombes stepped up and hit his penalty with power that went in via the underside of the bar.

Welling were throwing everything they had at Wealdstone as Jay-Rich headed a corner wide. But they almost grabbed a deserved point deep into injury time. Jebb played a defence splitting ball through to Aaron Cosgrave who took a touch but with the advancing Oxborough standing tall Cosgrave could only shoot straight at the keeper much to the despair of the Wings faithful.

It proved to be the last action as Wealdstone ran out victors. Welling now turn their attention to the FA Cup next week and a home time with Chipstead FC on Saturday, a game that they cannot afford to take lightly. Kick off 3pm.
