Report

Welling made it three wins on the bounce with three clean sheets in the process. Wings Number one Dan Wilks kept up his impressive recent form saving a first half penalty to give Welling the foundation to record the win.

The Wings started well as Gavin McCallum fired over the bar early on.

Brendan Kiernan then did well to get a shot off from an acute angle but his effort was saved, but it was bright start from Welling.

Then out of nowhere in the 16th minute Hungerford won a penalty. A ball out of defence caught The Wings static that largely was due to the Wings backline seemingly sure Danilo Orsi-Dadomo would be flagged offside, he never was and Jordan Gibbons got back to make a challenge but was adjudged to have fouled Dadomo in the process and the penalty was awarded.

Orsi-Dadomo picked himself up to take the penalty but Wilks stood tall as the penalty was smashed with power but Wilks guessed right and produced a brilliant save smothering the penalty.

Wilks then had to be on top form denying Rhys Kavanagh as he worked his way through the defence but Wilks denied him with a smart save.

Slowly Welling regrouped and Danny Mills headed over a Kiernan corner and then shortly after Mills controlled McCallum’s cross before turning and shooting but his effort went just over as the sides went in level at the break.

Just like the first half Welling started the second half well Arnaud Mendy hitting a rasping shot just wide with the keeper stranded.

Hungerford’s Alfy Whittingham diverted a low cross just wide as the home side attacked.

However in the 61st minute Welling took the lead. Kiernan played in Bradley Goldberg who raced forward he then looked up and crossed for Mills who smashed the ball home via the underside of the bar.

Hungerford tried to rally as Kavanagh stabbed the ball wide from close range.

But Welling were still looking for a 2nd and Kiernan crossed for Mills but his header was deflected wide. From the corner Anthony Acheampong blazed over.

Hungerford had one last chance as Josh Martin headed over from Darren Foxley’s corner.

As it was Welling who should have wrapped the game up in injury time as Kiernan burst clear but shot wide. It mattered not as Welling made it three wins on the bounce and opened up an eight point lead in the race for a play off place with ten games remaining. It was the perfect way to end February for The Wings as they recorded the most points gained by any side in the league throughout the course of the month.
