Report

A crowd of 611 were able to return to watch The Wings, for the first time since March, but the same problems that have blighted the Wings early season games continued. The inability to score goals with crucial chances and being susceptible to conceding goals from set pieces.

Welling started well and went close early on as Ryan Blackman slipped the ball through to Dipo Akinyemi but his angled shot beat Will Puddy, but went wide of the far post.

Anthony Cook then smashed a free kick out the ground from a good position.

Lyle Della-Verde had a snap shot saved by Puddy before Chippenham started to come into the game. Marlon Jackson having a shot deflected wide before forcing Harness into a save pushing his effort onto the bar.

Right on half time Della-Verde spun and hit an effort that went just wide.

Again Welling started the second half well and Akinyemi did very well to create space for a shot but be shot straight at Puddy.

Then came the game changing chance great hold up play from Akinyemi saw him slip the ball into Ade Shokunbi who had made a great bursting run from midfield and with just Puddy to beat the Veteran keeper made a super save to prevent the Wings taking the lead.

This missed chance seemed to effect Welling as Chippenham started to get on top, Callum Gunner seeing his effort smash the bar before Brad Ash drew a save out of Nathan Harness.

In the 68th minute Chippenham went ahead from a corner, Welling switched off and a Joe Hanks corner was nodded in by Ash at the near post.

It was Chippenham who looked more likely to add to the tally as Harness made a great save to deny Chris Zebroski before he pushed away a Hanks effort.

A dejected Welling had one last chance but Substitute Matt Everitt tried a chip from twenty yards that was easily saved by Puddy.

Welling now turn their attention to the FA Trophy as Oxford City come to PVR on Tuesday night.

Welling United: Harness, Johnson, Cook, Beeden, Hobbs, Olagunju (Isiaka 82), Shokunbi, Della-Verde (Liburd 67), Akinyemi, Blackman, Ilic (Everitt 58). Subs not used: Azeez, Ainsworth.
