Report

In a quite extraordinary game, Welling failed to hold onto a 4-1 lead as they succumbed to two stoppage time goals at Slough Town.

A point on the road at Slough before the game would have been looked upon encouragingly by The Wings but the manner of this result feels like it was very much two points dropped.

Welling got off to the perfect start a good move down the right saw Chori Johnson cross which could only be half cleared to Stefan Ilic and he smashed home from close range.

They could and should have made it two nil shortly after, Akinyemi getting free down the left before cutting inside but Turner made a smart save with his feet.

Slough began to come into the game and Paul Hodges stretched for an effort which he put over the bar. But the home side did equalise shortly after, a corner was met at the near post by Ryan Bird and he powered the ball into the roof of the net.

Welling responded and went back ahead in the 25th minute, another good move down the right saw Cook this time provide the cross and the ball fell kindly for Akinyemi who powered an effort past Turner.

Keeper Reice Cook then made a fine low save down to his right from Harris. But it was Welling who went further ahead. A short corner was played to Stefan Ilic he struck a powerful effort goalwards that deflected off of Akinyemi and into the goal.

Welling were playing with full confididence and a good move resulted in Johnson crossing but Akinyemi just failed to keep a header down.

Into the second half Welling lost Chori Johnson to injury as he pulled up sharply with a hamstring injury, this would prove to be a blow for The Wings.

But on 50 minutes the away side were awarded a free kick after Akinyemi was founded. Up stepped Captain Antony Cook and he curled the ball past Jack Turner to put Welling 4-1 up. On the hour mark Ryan Bird missed a good chance scuffing an effort over the bar from close range.

With twenty minutes to go Slough pulled a goal back to make it 2-4, The Wings got got out down the right, and a cross was met on the volley by Worlsfold for a great finish.

Welling then missed two good opportunities, first Cook blazed wide from range before Welling caught Slough on the counter with Akinyemi played in he burst forward from the half way line, having a lot of time to think about his next move a combination of keeper and defender were able to thwart him and the chance went.

With Slough beginning to through an onslaught at Welling, the away side began to lose shape and discipline. Dan Boateng received the first of what proved to be two yellow cards as he entangled with Worlsfold on half way. His second yellow arrived shortly after tripping Harris as he was through meaning Boateng had to watch the closing stages from the tunnel.

With 5 minutes of added on time Slough pulled a third back an effort into the Welling area hit Harris and flew in.

With Welling looking likely to hang on, Slough completed the comeback with the last kick of the game. A long ball forward was not dealt with by the Welling defence allowing Harris to nip in round Keeper Cook he managed to divert the ball away from Harris but only into the path of Worlsfold who tucked the ball home to send the home side wild. It was a bitter pill for Welling to swallow but one Wings fans will hope they can learn from.

Another enforced break owing to the FA Cup means Welling face another two week break and play yet another away game this time Eastbourne Borough on 31st October.
