About the WSU
Wings Supporters United (formerly known as the Wings Projects Committee) is into it's fifth year of fund raising efforts by Welling United supporters FOR Welling United supporters. Since our initial meeting in February 2004 we have turned over more than £51,000 through a variety of events and initiatives whilst spending approximately £48,000 to stage them and on benefits to club and fans.Examples of our achievements include big screen facilities in the clubhouse, improvements to the stadium particularly around the entrance area at PVR as well as equipping the matchday stewards and even squad strengthening.
The WSU currently comprises a small group of people working to organise these events in between work and family commitments. We have been criticised in the past for our mistakes and poor communication. This criticism has at times been deserved. Invariably our shortcomings have been due to lack of time collectively and/or individually to fully prepare and market an event or fund raiser. In short, too few people taking on too much work.
However it should not be taken for a lack of passion or commitment to our club.
Right now the WSU lacks numbers. This is due to general changes of circumstances at home or at work of regular attendees resulting in their moving on. Those of us attending WSU regular monthly meetings do our best but when trying to achieve any goal you can always get more done with more hands.
When we conceived the idea of a supporters fund raising group we reckoned that with an average match attendance of 550 we hoped that if maybe 5% of the fanbase got together 25-30 people pulling in the same direction could achieve great things hence the initial aim of the now much derided 'roof over one end'.
Currently our meetings average 9-10 people.
If we can turnover on average more than £15,000 per annum with our limited attandance imagine what we could achieve with twice as many people!
We therefore appeal for help. We need more Welling United supporters to come along with ideas and a little time so that we can make more things happen. We are not asking for a lot as we realise only too well that there are more important things for all of us but a LITTLE effort from a lot achieves much more than A LOT of effort from a few.
Our meetings take place in the Executive Lounge at PVR on the second Thursday of each month and we would appeal to anyone who feels they might like to come along if only to see what we are about or hopefully to get involved in regular activity to come along to our next meeting. There are no strings, ties or commitments required from anyone. Either just turn up (you would be made most welcome) have a drink and observe or if you would prefer ring us on 07836 577 940 if you want to know anymore before deciding whether to attend.
We sincerely look forward to seeing you there.
