In the first ever match between the two clubs a Welling United X1 won at Welling Town 2-0 on Thursday evening. The pre season friendly took place at Bayliss Avenue, the former home of Thamesmead Town and the new home of Kent County League Division Two West side Welling Town.
In front of a bumper crowd estimated at over 200, the Wings included first team squad members David Moli and Alex Cathline in their starting X1 and led 2-0 at the break through goals from triallists Callum Phillip and Alec Fiddes (penalty), It could and should have been more at the break but the Wings had proved very wasteful in front of goal. The Boots (Welling Town) came into the game in the second half utilising the pace of second half substitute Lamarl Hubbard on the left but they couldn’t find a way into the game or find a way past the young Wings keepers. Jack Moore, the home keeper in the second half produced a string of good saves and blocks to prevent the Wings adding to their goals tally. The Boots brought on ex Welling United striker Jon Main in the second half but the former AFC Wimbledon and Tonbridge Angels striker couldn’t capitalise on a couple of good chances.
A Wings triallist X1 will travel to Bedfont on Saturday as the Wings continue pre season.
We would like to wish the Boots all the best this season and thank them for their hospitality this evening.
