Welling United 1-2 Haringey Borough

Welling manager Jamie Coyle was left “disgusted” with his players as Haringey Borough knocked the Wings out of the FA cup at very first hurdle. Despite the abject performance, Welling could have squeezed through had Christian Nanetti scored his penalty, as it was Haringey scored a penalty of their own just a minute later, to win the tie.

Just 8 minutes were on the clock when a hopeful punt out of defence caught the Welling backed four standing cold, this allowed Ralstoh Gabriel to run clear before coolly rounding Dillon Barnes and slotting into an empty net.

1 almost became 2 as Gabriel tried his luck from range and just curled an effort wide.

The Wings slowly tried to get in the game as Joe Healy saw a deflected shot sail over the bar for a corner.

The Wings won two free kicks in quick succession just outside of the area, the first that Christian Nanetti blasted into the wall and the second were Joe Healy whipped in a great delivery that Eli Phipps headed just wide.

Back came the away side and Anthony McDonald hit an effort wide.

Welling almost grabbed an equaliser on half time as Eli Phipps headed wide from a super Jeffrey Monakana’s cross.

It was the last contribution from Phipps as he made way for Jack Jebb during the half time break.

The Wings drew level in the 57′ minute former Margate keeper Valery Pajtet came for and missed Monakana’s deep cross and Healy was on the spot to slide the ball into the empty net.

Healy almost gave Welling the lead shortly after, beating his way through the Borough defence but he poked his effort straight at Pajetat.

Pajetat then saved well from Jebbs free kick, before the crazy minute commenced

Nanetti was brought down in the area by Gabriel as Nanetti clung to the ball and took the penalty. His low tame effort away to the right of Pajetat was easily saved. Sensing their luck maybe in Haringey went straight up the other end and won a a penalty of their own. Olufemi was brought down by a ridiculous challenge from Ben Jefford, who had three Welling players supporting him. Gabriel confidently stepped up and sent Barnes the wrong way.

Welling as they had done all game huffed and puffed but failed to trouble a well organised Haringey defence. In the last minute of injury time, Jamie Coyle almost stole a draw but his header was saved by Pajetat. The final whistle was greeted with a chorus of boos from a very disgruntled Park View Road faithful.

Welling face Charlton Athletic in the Kent senior cup at home on Wednesday, before they travel to Havant & Waterlooville where Jamie Coyle has said he is looking for a big reaction from his players.
