Welling United 0-1 Weston-Super-Mare

Welling crashed out of The FA Trophy at the first hurdle as they produced a laboured performance against Weston Super Mare. The result means Welling have failed to win any cup matches including county cup competitions in the 2017/2018 season.

It took Welling just 30 seconds to record a shot, Captain Connor Dymond received the ball on the right before producing a left footed shot which just went over.

Welling introduced new signing goal keeper Ryan Sandford to the side and he had to be alert to claim a low shot from Jake Lee, then he made an identical save from Danny Greenslade.

Weston missed a golden opportunity shortly after as a deep free kick from Dayle Grubb found Jake Lee at the back post, but he failed to convert and the chance had gone. Centre back Harvey Smith then tried an audacious overhead kick from a corner but went well wide.

Weston continued to press, but they were not really troubling Sandford in the Welling goal. Jeffrey Monakana tried to use his pace to stretch the Weston defence and his over hit cross almost caught out Luke Purnell but the ball dipped onto the roof of the net.

Welling did finish the half strongly and they hit the post in the 41st minute. Jack Jebb played the ball out wide to Goldberg, the former Bromley man hit a fierce effort that beat Purnell but hit the outside of the post before going wide.

At half time Welling lost Jack Parkinson to illness and he was replaced by Ian Gayle. It took Weston just 67 seconds to open the scoring in the 2nd half. The impressive Dayle Grubb played the ball to Gethyn Hill who took a touch before firing low past Sandford.

Weston went in surge of a 2nd and Naby Diallo had a shot saved by Sandford.

Bradley Goldberg hit another low shot that Purnell saved for a corner before Dayle Grubb brought a smart save from Ryan Sandford from a free kick.

In the 72nd minute Monakana produced a stunning cross that found Bradbrook with a looping header that had Purnell back peddling but his effort crashed against the bar.

The Wings then had the ball in the net but Tom Bradbrook was adjudged to have been offside as the ball came through to him from a Christian Nanetti shot.

With time ticking down Jake Lee almost added a 2nd but he fizzed a shot just wide

The Wings almost stole an unlikely equaliser in time added on but Purnell produced a brilliant save to deny Goldberg.

Welling now have a week to prepare for East Thurrock at home knowing their home form must improved as they enter a tough run of games in the lead up to Christmas.
