For the 2nd time in less than a week, Welling found themselves not getting the rub of the green. A last second equaliser on Monday was then matched with a smash and grab victory that was typical of a side that are champions elect.
Not for the first time this season at home Welling started slowly.
James Hayter fired wide within the first 30 seconds before Jason Prior who got the better of Jack Parkinson but likewise scuffed his effort wide across the face of goal.
Jason Prior then saw a header saved by Bailey Vose with the striker well placed in the area.
A pile driver from Andreas Robinson brought a super finger tipped save from Bailey Vose as Welling struggled to find their feet early on.
But find their feet they did and Adam Coombes saw a snap shot deflected wide for a corner.
A last ditch tackle from Jordan Rose stopped Coombes bursting through. This brought about a bizarre altercation between defender Rose and keeper Ryan Young in the Havant goal.
For all Havant’s chances it was Welling who came closest in first half stoppage time. Jack Jebb produced a stunning free kick 25 yards out from goal, that was matched by an equally stunning save by Ryan Young who tipped the ball onto the crossbar that then went over. From the resulting corner Jack Parkinson cannoned a header off the post.
Into the 2nd half and Welling started brightly Coombes’ hit the post with a header, but the flag was up for an adjudged foul in the build up.
A long searching ball from Jebb found Coombes but he could only smash his effort straight at Young who palmed the ball away for a corner.
Unfortunately on the hour mark Adam Coombes pulled up sharply and was immediately substituted, The Wings faithful will be holding their breaths which regards to the severity of the injury. Ryan Hall replaced Coombes.
In the 71st minute Havant snatched the lead. A corner from Williams was not dealt with by the Wings defence and the ball dropped perfectly at the feet of Strugnell who poked the ball home, for his first goal in over a year.
With their tails in front Havant then showed why they have only conceded 26 goals all season as they shut up shop. Welling did miss a glorious chance in the 84th minute when a clever ball from Jebb found Healy who headed across goal, but Jamie Philpot failed to keep his header down from close range.
Welling were trying everything to get back in the game and Callum Driver hit an audacious effort well over before Philpot glanced a header wide from Christian Nanetti’s cross.
Despite the five minutes added on, Havant held on, leaving Welling dejected and knowing that Tuesday’s home game with Hemel Hempstead is huge in their quest for a play off place.
