Welling crashed to back to back defeats on Tuesday night at the hands of title favourites Chelmsford City. Having defended manfully for 82 minutes, a clumsy challenge in the area from Alfie Pavey saw Lee Barnard score from the penalty spot.
On the back of Chris Lewington’s sudden retirement on Monday, the management team acted quickly and drafted in Colchester’s Dillon Barnes on loan to replace him.
The Wings started brightly and they went close first. Connor Dymond slipped an expertly weighted ball through to Bradley Goldberg, the striker took a slight heavy first touch but still managed to force a smart save out of Sam Beasant who blocked the ball with his feet.
Welling were on the front foot again and former Welling man Chris Bush was adjudged to have handled the ball just outside of the area, the Welling players adamant that it was inside. Christian Nanetti hit the free kick straight at the wall and it was cleared.
Chelmsford slowly crept into the game and they went close when a clever move from a throw in saw Kudus Oyenuga set up Chris Dickson but he fired well wide of the goal.
Dillion Barnes then had to be alert as a Michael West shot from range took a massive defection that looped up but Barnes saved well.
The visitors should have taken the lead shortly after, a Michael West free kick was met by Oyenuga but he headed over unmarked in the area.
If the first half was an even affair the 2nd half saw Chemlsford dominant possession for long periods as Welling failed to even create a chance.
Oyenuga a menace throughout for Chelmsford wriggled free for a shot but Coyle did well to block his goal bound effort.
Former Ebbsfleet man Michael West fired over from 20 yards before sub Lee Barnard hit a stinging shot that Barnes did well to claim.
Welling were still defending really well and throwing bodies in the way of shots as Ian Gayle bravely blocked an effort from Matthew Johnson.
However in the 83rd minute, Welling failed to hold out. After the refee Jack Packman overruled an offside decision to give a corner, Alfie Pavey made a clumsy challenge on Barnard, pushing over the City sub in the box and the penalty was awarded. Up stepped Barnard and he sent Barnes the wrong way.
Chelsmford nearly added a 2nd in time added on as well as Oyenuga broke on the counter attack but forced a good save from Barnes.
