Welling suffered stoppage time heartbreak on Monday night as a late Ricky Wellard header, saw The Wings slip to defeat. It was harsh on the Wings in a game that neither side really did enough to deserve the win.
Early on it was Wealdstone who saw more of the ball, albeit without creating any goal scoring opportunities. In fact it was Welling who came closest to opening the scoring Ryan Hall’ made space for a shot and hit a fierce effort that keeper Jonathan North did well to save.
Bradley Bubb then went close for the home side but hit his effort over from an acute angle.
But Wealdstone were starting to now create opportunities and Vose had to be alert when he saved a header from Mustafa Tiryaki.
The home side then saw a glorious opportunity pass them by, Whichelow beat two defenders and burst into the box and with Vose advancing, Whichelow toe poked the ball under the body of Vose, but just wide of the post.
Despite being forced back, Welling had a good opportunity from a corner. Jack Jebb’s corner fell kindly to Jack Parkinson and his goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Samuel Cox, despite appeals from the Welling players of handball.
The game was becoming stretched and within 20 seconds Matthew Whichelow converted a low cross at the back post, but he was adjudged to have been offside.
Wealdstone then missed another good opportunity when Whichelow burst down the left to cross for the unmarked Bradley Bubb but he could only head into arms of Vose.
It was The Wings turn to pass up a good opportunity a low cross into the box found Ryan Hall and with the goal at his mercy, the winger decided to take one touch to many and the chance went missing.
Into the second half and Welling started the half brightly Olu Durojaiye hit an effort that North did well to hold.
Jack Parkinson did well to block a powerful Danny Green shot that was heading goalwards.
Ricky Wellard then saw a header saved by Vose.
A good move saw Joe Healy release Bradley Goldberg who in turn made space for the shot but just dragged his effort just wide.
Excellent football again from Welling this time between Jack Jebb and Goldberg saw a cute flick from Jebb release Goldberg, but he was inches from giving Welling the lead.
Wealdstone went close with 7 minutes to go when substitute David Pratt hit a half volley over the bar.
But with Wealdstone forcing some sustained pressure and The Wings giving away some cheap free kicks in the process. Wealdstone snatched a late winner in the 3rd minute of 4 minutes added on. A corner kick was met by Rickey Wellard at the near post and he glanced his header into the net, to break Welling hearts.
The Wings could have rescued a point but Callum Driver saw a fiercely struck hit deflect wide for a corner.
It was difficult to take for Welling but they will look to bounce back with a positive result at East Thurrock on Saturday.
