Audel Wings In

Wings boss Steve King has moved to further bolster his back line with the signing of French centre-back Thierry Audel. Audel has featured in both of The Wings’ pre-season friendlies so far, particularly impressing against Charlton on Saturday.

The defender is no stranger to King after the pair worked together at Macclesfield Town. Since leaving Macc to join Crewe Alexandra for an undisclosed fee in 2013, Audel has racked up a number of EFL appearances including over 40 for Notts County over two seasons. Audel signed for Barrow last summer as and was made captain, making just short of 20 appearances before an arm injury curtailed his campaign.

Bienvenue à PVR, Thierry!

Welling United 1-2 Charlton Athletic

In this traditional curtain raiser friendly The Wings put up a solid display as League one side Charlton Athletic edged past Welling at a sweltering Park View Road.

With Charlton naming two separate sides for each 45 minute half, The Wings played a a solid XI for 60 minutes before making any changes.

The game started in lively fashion and it was The Wings who took the lead first.

Adam Coombes was allowed to much space on the right channel before he raced clear and fired low into the bottom corner for a smart goal.

The lead lasted just 60 seconds though. Ajose was played through but new Wings number 1 Dan Wilks made a great save to keep out his shot, Karlan Grant then followed up his rebound but that was blocked, before the ball was half cleared to a grateful Ajose who tapped home from close range. .

Tariqe Fosu, curled an effort over the bar, before the same player had a fiercely struck shot well saved by Wilks.

Charlton were now seeing a lot of the ball Jake Forster-Caskey tested Wilks from range but he saved well. However Welling had their moments as well, Nassim L’Ghoul had a chance but fired over before new signing Richard Orlu saw a header a cleared off the line .

Into the second half Welling made six changes on the hour mark as the tempo of the game slowed down. A lapse in concentration in the Welling defence saw Taylor burst clear but with only Wilks to beat he curled well wide.

Wilks was having an impressive debut in goal for Welling and he made another super save to deny Taylor.

With the game heading towards its last quarter, Charlton finally took the lead but in rather fortunate circumstances in the 76th minute. Forster-Caskey struck a free-kick that took a wicked deflection off the wall and cannoed off onto the crossbar. The ball fell kindly to Taylor who bundled the ball over the line.

Whilst Charlton had chances, Wilks continued to make saves denying Albie Morgan. But deep into injury time Bradley Goldberg who played the whole 90 minutes almost grabbed an equaliser but he side footed his effort wide. It was a good workout for The Wings who now have full a week of training ahead of them before they entertain Watford Under 23’s next Saturday at Park View Road.

Welling United: Wilks, Gibbons, Braham-Barrett, Ijaha, Orlu, Audal, L’Ghoul, Kissock, Goldberg, Coombes, McCallum. Substitutes included: Dymond, Mendy, Acheampong, Ambroisine, Newton, Johnson.

Attendance: 1,020

King adds five to squad

Wings boss Steve King continues his preparations for the 2018/19 campaign with a further five signings.

First up is a familiar face, centre-back Anthony Acheampong returns for his third stint with the Wings after spells at Maidstone, Ebbsfleet and Barnet. The 28-year old arrives at PVR after promotion to the Vanarama National South with Dulwich Hamlet last term.

Further bolstering the back line is centre-back Richard Orlu. Orlu joins from Woking where he spent the 2017/18 season as captain. Before that he spent four years at Kent neighbours Dover Athletic and experienced promotion to the National League with The Whites becoming a fixture in a successful back line.

Adding some attacking threat is French winger Nassim L’Ghoul. Nassim follows Wings boss King from former club Whitehawk where he had become a fans’ favorite for his exciting wing play. L’Ghoul has had spells with St. Neots Town and the Nike Academy as well as various trials with League clubs such as Charlton Athletic.

Winger Gavin McCallum has also signed on for the upcoming season. The wide-man joins from Eastbourne Borough where he was voted Supporters’ Player of the Season in the most recent campaign. Former Canadian international McCallum made 39 appearances for The Sports last season contributing 15 goals and a number of assists from wide areas.

Finally, midfielder John Paul Kissock joins King’s new look Welling United. Kissock is familiar to King with the pair working together at both Macclesfield and guiding Whitehawk to the National South playoffs in 2015. Dubbed the “non-league Messi” during his younger years for his footballing style and resemblance to the Argentine superstar Kissock joins after most recently playing at Southport.

All five have signed one-year deals with the club.

With today’s additions the current squad is as listed below:

Dan Wilks
Jordan Gibbons
Craig Braham-Barrett
Archie Johnson
Anthony Acheampong
Richard Orlu
Jack Jebb
Connor Dymond
JP Kissock
Nassim L’Ghoul
Zack Newton
Gavin McCallum
Bradley Goldberg
Adam Coombes
