Welling welcomed back Adam Coombes to the club this week and the striker capped his return with the winning goal as The Wings grounded out 3 points in tricky conditions.
East Thurrock striker Sam Higgins who scored a double against the Wings in the previous encounter at Park View Road had the first opportunity of the game but he hit an effort over from twenty five yards out.
The home side seemed to settle into the game the better and Higgins had another opportunity but despite making room for a shot he dragged an effort wide.
Ten minutes had past and The Wings slowly got into stride. A super move that saw Durojaiye playing the ball into Coombes who played a delicious flick back to Durojaiye which allowed the Wings midfielder a clear sight of goal but his shot was saved by the feet of Lukas Lidakevicius.
Another new signing Magnus Okuonghae who impressed on debut played a sublime ball into the channel which found Coombes but he dragged an effort just wide.
Welling were now on top and Coombes combined well with Jack Jebb but he curled his first time shot just over the bar.
Another lovely move from the Wings saw Jebb play a smart ball into Coombes and his clever dummy played Bradley Goldberg in but again Lidakevicius made a smart save.
East Thurrock had their moments as well and they came inches from going ahead. Higgins broke away and then played in Joe Christou who beared down on goal but dragged his effort wide of the post.
Welling though again came back on the attack. A deep free kick into the box from Jack Jebb found Joe Healy arriving late on the scene and he met the free kick on the half volley but he couldn’t keep his effort down and it sailed over.
Goldberg and Lidakevicius then continued their on going battle but once again Lidakevicius made another excellent save and kept East Thurrock level at the break.
Into the 2nd half and within 30 seconds of the restart Coombes’ had an excellent chance meeting a Ryan Hall cross with a strong header which was straight at the grateful Lidakevicius.
However Coombes did not have to wait to much longer for his comeback goal. In the 56th minute, The Wings went ahead.
An excellent free kick from Jack Jebb saw Jack Parkinson challenge keeper Lidakevicius, the keeper could only push the ball up into the crowded area. Coombes was first to react and he looped a header that took an age to drop into the net via the inside of the post, as Coombes wheeled away in delight.
East Thurrock tried to rally and Max Cornhill flashed a diving header just over the bar. Sam Higgins then hit an audacious effort over the bar as the home side again pushed for an equaliser.
With the pitch cutting up and with Welling now trying to manage the game properly, the Wings looked to counter attack at every opportunity. A counter attack saw the Wings win a free kick. A fierce Ryan Hall effort was palmed away by Lidakevicius.
With 6 minutes remaining East Thurrock had the ball in the net. Michael Clark was on hand to bundle the ball home only to see the linesman flag up to rule the goal out.
The Wings nearly added a late double when Jeffrey Monakana picked out Jamie Philpot in the area but his shot lacked power and was easily gathered.
The Wings saw out the 4 minutes of additional time as they claimed a gritty 3 points to put them firmly back in the play off picture.
