Welling were comprehensively beaten by Chelsmford on Saturday. Not help by illness to player manager Jamie Coyle before the game and the sudden suspension of Joe Healy, however The Wings could have little excuse for a performance that did not see them get competitive at all.
The Wings went behind as early as the 2nd minute. Scott Davies picked the ball up in midfield, the Welling defence sat off and allowed the midfielder just hit an effort that crept past Sandford and into the net.
Just four minutes later, and Chelsmford went further ahead. A cross from the Welling right, was converted by Luke Daley who had all the time in the world to poke past Sandford. It was a disastrous start from Welling.
A tame Jack Jebb free kick was saved by Sam Beasant as Welling at least tried to get back into the game.
Despite conceding twice, Ryan Sandford kept Welling in the game early on as he some how saved a Chris Dickson header from close range, the stopper pushing away his effort.
The game was as good as done though when Chelmsford added a 3rd in the 38th minute. Kudus Oyenuga worked his way through a crowd of Welling players with ease before slotting past Sandford.
It could have been four shortly after but Anthony Church just failed to connect with the ball with the goal at his mercy.
The game was one way traffic, with Welling looking vulnerable everytime City attacked. Chris Dickson again got past the Welling defence to easily before shooting over.
Into the 2nd half Welling Jeffrey Monakana came on for Harry Phipps and whilst the Wings did see more of the ball, it was still Chelmsford who threatened more.
Antony Church missed a simple header from close range, Michael Spillane then shot wide as the onslaught continued.
In a rare Welling attack it took Welling left back Ben Jefford to shoot over from distance to register a Welling shot.
The 4th Chelmsford goal arrived in the 71st minute and it was the best goal of the game. Dickson played a delightful one/two with Johnson and Dickson stroked the ball past Sandford, for a lovely goal.
Chelmsford almost added a 5th but Sandford pulled off a super save to deny Davies.
Welling got on the score sheet late on as Goldberg, was tripped in the area. Goldberg picked himself up to calmly stroke the penalty home.
But that was as good as it got for a disappointing Welling. Who will have to improve greatly if they want to repay the travelling Welling fans with some festive cheer against Dartford.
