Bognor Regis Town 1-3 Welling United

The Wings bounced back from defeat on Saturday, with a workman like performance to secure three points against relegation threatened Bognor.

Player manager Jamie Coyle returned to the starting line up for the first time since New Years Day with injury forcing out Jack Parkinson. Jamie Philpot got a deserved start as The Wings went with an attacking looking line up.

This attacking intent that Jamie Coyle spoke about pre match was rewarded within the opening 5 minutes. Jamie Philpot picking up a loose pass in the midfield anf playing the ball to Adam Coombes who took a touch before hitting a low effort past Dan Lincoln, to give Welling the perfect start.

Despite being ten points adrift of safety, Bognor known as a passing side soon had Welling on the back foot. Bailey Vose producing a magnificent diving save to deny a Richard Gilot pile driver which was heading in.

Bognor came forward again and this time Jimmy Muitt fired an effort over after ball had fell kindly to him.

The game had now settled and with Bognor doing the pressing, Welling were happy to soak up this pressure and look to hit on the counter attack. A counter attack saw the ball played out wide to Callum Driver but his good strike that was heading in, was deflected wide for a corner.

Welling were frustrating the Bognor attack and restricting them to shots from distance Muitt was next to try his luck but Vose, pushed his effort away.

The home side continued to push for an equaliser and in the 25th minute they almost levelled. Ollie Pearce made some room for a shot and his effort was creeping in until Vose got the slightest of touches onto the ball to turn it around the post.

However in the 37th minute Welling scored the best goal of the game in a classic counter attack move. Adam Coombes burst forward at pace with options either side, he played a delightful defence splitting pass to Jamie Philpot who dinked the advancing Dan Lincoln, to score a super team goal.

This goal seem to deflate Bognor and a marvellous save from Dan Lincoln denied a Bradley Goldberg header from a Jack Jebb cross.

The interval probably came at the wrong time for Welling, as Bognor regrouped and started the half on the front foot. Bognor should have reduced the deficit in the 48th minute, Kristian Campbell got free in the box and had just Vose to beat, but Campbell poked the ball wide much to the Wings relief.

Again Bognor were restricted to shooting from range and Vose did well to hold onto a Richard Gilot deflected effort.

Clever play from Joe Healy saw him play a dinked pass into Goldberg, from an acute angle as he forced Dan Lincoln into a smart save with his feet.

Just past the hour mark, Adam Coombes had a golden chance for The Wings a Bradley Goldberg shot come cross found Coombes but the Wings man rather snatched at the ball and scuffed his effort wide.

However in the 67th minute Coombes, got his 2nd and Welling’s 3rd goal. A super cross into the box from Jack Jebb caused chaos in the Bognor defence and Coombes was on hand to take advantage poking the ball home from close range.

Coombes going in search of his hat trick saw a dipping long range effort parried away with Goldberg just unable to follow up the rebound.

Despite being three goals behind, Bognor still continued to pile on the pressure.

The home fans were then rewarded as Harvey Whyte got to the byline before firing across the face of goal and for Ibra Sekajja to tap in at the far post.

With 4 minutes of injury time both sides nearly added to the score line. Coombes playing in Goldberg but his effort was deflected inches wide of the goal with Lincoln beaten.

Bognor themselves came close to grabbing a 2nd consolation goal, as a driving run from Gary Charman resulted in him firing a low ball into a crowded area, that some how missed everyone, as the final whistle went.

It was a morale boosting win for Welling as they set off on their travels again on Saturday with a trip to Hungerford Town.
