In the second of a run of three tough games injury ravaged, Welling United suffered their first away league defeat of the season and only there second defeat this season, against big spenders Weymouth.

Goals either side of half-time by Brian Dutton and Danny Shipp put the home side 2-0 up before Welling's Matt Carruthers insured a nervous final 17 minutes for the home side.

The Wings started the game without five first team regulars including October player of the month Danny Kedwell and Steve Perkins who failed fitness test just before kick off. However the spirited Wings took the game to their hosts and more than held their own in the opening half hour.

Unfortunately, the Wings paid the price for some static defending four minutes before half time when Dutton was allowed a free header from a corner, which he powered past the helpless Jamie Turner.

The vital 2nd goal came 11 minutes into the second half when Darren Wheeler ran at the Wings defence before the ball fell very kindly for Danny Shipp who couldn't miss and slotted past Turner.

But a dogged Welling, showed plenty of spirit and where never outplayed by there big money hosts, and the Wings came very close to pulling a goal back on 71 minutes when Che Stadhart hit the post from close range.

However two minutes later Welling were rewarded and their persistence paid off. Che Stadhart set up Carruthers who produced a neat finish under the on rushing Matthews. The sending off of Matt Lee, for a second bookable offence, made the search for an equaliser harder.

Even with ten men the sending off didn't deter Welling and they really had Weymouth on the back foot towards the end and came mightily close to a late equaliser, when with eight minutes left Stadhart was denied from close range by Weymouth keeper Jason Matthews and Matt Bodkin's injury-time cross was just kept out by the finger tips of Matthews.

It was a spirited performance against a team who look favourites for promotion, but Welling ran The Terras close and I am sure the two teams won't be to far apart come May.
