Adrian Pennock made numerous changes to the side that defeated Redbridge in last Sunday's FA Trophy tie. Luke Howell, Rob Owen, and Adrian Clarke replaced Lee Shearer, Matt Carruthers and Matt Bodkin. Barry Ahsby made his first league debut along-side Chris Moore in the centre of defence. The match also saw the return of ex-Wings keeper Glen Knight as well as former loan player Martin Carthy, both of whom were in the starting 11 for Thurrock.
The Wings began brightly with an abundance of chances within the first few minutes of the game. Leon Solomon had a shot from the edge of the box well saved by Glen Knight before Danny Kedwell hit a shot just wide of the post.
Welling took the lead on 6 minutes when a long ball from Leon Solomon was collected by Che Stadhart who crossed the ball for Danny Kedwell, allowing him to nod the ball home from close range.
The nearest Thurrock came to equalising in the first half fell to Martin Carthy. Steve Heffer headed the ball into the path of Carthy who nodded the ball past the helpless Jamie Turner, but Chris Moore chased the ball down to spectacularly clear the ball off the line.
The last chance of the half fell to Danny Kedwell who hit a snap shot at Knight but the effort was well saved by the ex-Wings keeper.
The second period saw the Wings squander a number of chances in front of goal, the first being a powerful header from Che Stadhart when he rose above the rest to head an Adrian Clarke free kick towards goal. The effort brought another superb save out of Thurrock keeper Glen Knight. Minutes later it was the turn of Rob Owen when a long range effort flew just inches over the bar.
The Wings had another opportunity to go two up when Steve Perkins nodded the ball into the path of Che Stadhart who was one on one with the keeper. However, Stadhart's poor first touch allowed Knight to comfortably collect the ball and yet another Welling chance went begging.
The Wings eventually paid for their missed opportunities when Steve Perkins brought down Tom Beech inside the box and Thurrock were awarded a penalty. Steve Harper stepped and converted his spot kick to draw Thurrock level 12 minutes before the final whistle.
Welling had more chances to retake the lead, all-falling to Che Stadhart. Two shots from the edge of the area went flying wide and a long-range header was just wide of the post.
The game finished 1-1, a disappointing result for the Wings considering the amount of opportunities the Home side had to score. However, with Thurrock currently in the playoffs and unbeaten in 5 games a draw may seem like a good result.
