Adrian Pennock made just one change from the side that drew 0-0 with Sutton United on New Years Eve. Matt Bodkin made his first league start since early December by replacing Matt Lee.
The Wings lost Barry Ashby just 17 minutes into the game with Lee Shearer replacing the injured defender. Thurrock had the better of the opening opportunities with both Lee Hodges and Martin Carthy going close for the Home side.
However, the Wings were awarded a penalty when Jimmy McFarlane handled the ball. Luke Howell's fine run allowed Matt Bodkin to pull the ball back for Rob Owen who hit a fierce shot towards goal. Thurrock captain Jimmy McFarlane handled on the line and referee Stuart Attwell awarded the visitors a penalty. McFarlane was promptly sent-off and the home side were 10 men down within 30 minutes of the kick-off.
Danny Kedwell's penalty was almost saved by former Wings keeper Glenn Knight, but fortunately the ball had just enough pace to roll over the line. Welling should have doubled their lead minutes later. Che Stadhart was through on goal but the Wings striker took too long to make up his mind, allowing Knight to comfortably save his poor effort.
The second period saw an even affair despite the visitors having the extra man. Che Stadhart headed home a Wings corner at the near post only to see the effort disallowed by referee Steve Atwell.
An hour into the match and the best chance of the evening fell to Matt Bodkin. Matt Bodkin was through one on one with keeper Glen Knight but his attempt at a chip left the Wings player red faced as the ball went straight into Knight's arms.
With the home side's increasing pressure despite being down to 10 men, it looked only a matter of time before they levelled the score. They did so on 74 minutes when Richard Goddard headed down a long ball into the path of Martin Carthy who smashed the ball home from close range. It was nothing more than Thurrock deserved after the visitors had wasted numerous opportunities and let the home side back into the game.
The sixth straight draw for Adrian Pennock's Wings and another disappointing result considering the amount of wasted opportunities. Welling travel to fourth place St. Albans on Saturday and a perfect chance for the Wings to get back on track.
