In front of the Wings biggest crowd this season of 634, it was Sutton that dominated the first half and the U's should have had the game safe by half time. The visitors created numerous chances throughout the first period and no doubt Ian Hazel will be wondering how his side left Park View Road empty-handed.
Three minutes into the game and Sutton created the first of many goal-scoring opportunities. A quick free kick from Paul Honey played Ross Gaynor through where his shot flashed just wide.
Just three minutes later and Sutton should have taken the lead when Charlie Ide was left free at the back post from Matt Gray's corner, but the striker headed against the underside of the bar.
The Wings created very little in terms of goal scoring opportunities and were certainly being outplayed by the team from Surrey.
The U's again hit the woodwork, this time on 26 minutes when Peter Fear struck a near-perfect free kick that crashed into the crossbar with keeper Jamie Turner beaten.
Sutton continued to press forward and minutes later again went agonisingly close to taking the lead. Gaynor's pinpoint low cross was met by Ide who poked his shot just inches wide of Turner's right-hand post. Matt Bodkin missed the homeside's best chance of the half when the midfielder fired into the side netting.
Further chances for the U's were all squandered and Welling were fortunate to go in level at half-time.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Wings performance and it took just a minute for Adrian Pennock's side to take the lead. A magnificent pass from Steve Perkins found Ellis Green on the right-wing who crossed the ball into the box for Danny Kedwell who fired his header low past Phil Wilson.
Welling could have doubled their lead on 52 minutes when Steve Perkins headed wide from Jamie Day's corner. Jamie Day then fired just wide of the target with a long range effort 3 minutes later.
Sutton had a strong penalty appeal turned down on 77 minutes when Charlie Ide appeared to be bundled over by John Guest, nevertheless the referee waved played on.
With Sutton unable to muster any further chances the Wings held on for the victory and three valuable points.
Welling travel to Basingstoke Town next Saturday, a side that picked up their first victory of the season yesterday.

Extracts from the Interview:
"Very pleased, I said to the boys before the game they will be a difficult team to play against. We had to battle for the win and I’m very pleased, clean sheet and a very good goal.
I thought second half we were much better, we looked a little lethargic but that’s the way they play they make you look lethargic. We stuck at it and grinded out a 1-0 win."
