The visitors had the better of the early possession and were unlucky not to have taken the lead four minutes in. Ellis Green crossed low for Steve Harper after beating Lewis Gonsalves for pace but the striker could only shoot straight at U's keeper Gary Hogan.
However, as the half progressed the homeside worked their way back into the game. Richard Harris fired wide on 20 minutes, before Ross Gaynor volleyed over after Steve Perkins' misclearance.
Tony Quinton then shot over when under pressure from Ben Lewis. Half an hour in and Welling's Andrew Sam could have scored his third of the season. Yet he failed to get enough on his header after some good work from Tony Battersby at the byline.
Gaynor saw another effort fly wide on 36 minutes before five minutes later against the run of play the Wings took the lead. Battersby was sent clear down the right from Green's ball where the on loan striker squared for Harper to tap the ball home.
Further chances for Sutton were squandered before the break.
The second half saw an inspired performance from Wings keeper Paul Hyde, with the former Dover Athletic man pulling off a number of magnificent saves. The first saw Hyde push John Scarborough's header onto the bar minutes after the restart.
However, there was very little the keeper could do to save Sutton's equaliser. Scarborough's header took a deflection past Hyde into the net from Gaynor's free-kick.
Battersby then had his header pushed onto the bar by Hogan with neither Harper nor Carthy able to reach the free ball.
It always looked likely that another goal was on the cards and fortunately it was for Adrian Pennock's side. Che Stadhart came off the bench to volley in at the far post from Jamie Day's cross six minutes from time.
Nevertheless, it was a nervy last few minutes for the excellent travelling support with Hyde forced into making another superb save from Gaynor’s free-kick.
Welling's next game is the FA Trophy replay against Tamworth on Tuesday, the match will be played at Stonebridge Road, the home of Gravesend & Northfleet.
Come on you Wings!
