So here we are back at Park View Road for another season, the summer break seems to be getting shorter each year and I doubt very many complain especially when it comes to the new Football season!

Welling lined up much as expected, but Lee Shearer was ruled. Che Stadhart another player missing from the squad has injury worries and the extent of the injury will not be known until the start of next week.

St. Albans started the match attacking the 'Road' end and the Saints started the brightest. Two early corners from the Saints put the Wings under some early pressure. The Saints went close after a looping header from Paul Hakim forced Turner to parry the ball away at full stretch. Again the Saints went close to taking the lead after Lee Clarke skipped past Chris Moore's challenge and put in a useful cross from the by-line. Luckily for the Wings there were no Saints players there for the tap-in. The Wings started to get back into the game with increasing amounts of possession down the left flank, however the final ball was lacking and many a chances went begging.

The closest the Wings went to tacking the lead came on 20 minutes as a through ball to Danny Kedwell from Matt Lee saw Kedwell shrug off challenges from both Ada and Kavanagh to pull back a cross into the 6-yard-box. With Bastock stranded in the Saints goal, all that was needed was someone to hit the ball into the empty goal. Both Pinnock and Carrurthers could not do so and Bastock eventually smothered the ball under a crowd of players.

Probably the most entertaining aspect of the first half was when Lee Gledhill took it upon himself to start redeveloping Park View Road, starting with the black boarding surrounding the pitch, an unorthodox method but you have to start somewhere…

The Saints took the lead on 36 minutes, a lapse in concentration from the Wings allowed Mark Graham's corner to be headed home by Lee Clarke! A less than perfect start from Welling and everyone feared the worst; flashbacks from last seasons start to the campaign were ever present in people's minds!

However, 10 minutes later in first half stoppage time the star of the show Danny Kedwell started his performance. A perfect through ball from Carrurthers put Kedwell through on goal and he sublimely slid the ball past Paul Bastock.

After the break Welling looked like a different side, dominating possession and in total control over the Saints. It didn't take long for the Wings to capitalise as with 57 minutes gone Matt Carrurthers put the Wings ahead after his reacted fastest to a lose ball and side footed the ball home.

Kedwell got his second of the afternoon with only 3 minutes left; from a Wings corner the former Herne Bay star confidently headed the ball home to put the Wings 3-1 up. Kedwell could have had his first hat-trick of his Wings career when his lob from the edge of the penalty box went narrowly wide.

So an excellent start from the Wings on the first game of the new season, but many will happily forgot the first half performance. Next up-a nice midweek trip to Histon for their first Home match of the new campaign, it won't be an easy affair for Pennock's Red Army, as the new boys beat Thurrock 2-1 on the opening day.

Bring on Histon.....
