Welling United drew 1-1 with Whyteleafe in a lacklustre display at Park View Road for the Wings. Despite taking the lead via Ryan Martin, Welling's promising start was short-lived. Asher Hudson headed in for the equaliser and the visitors could so easily have knocked the Wings out of the FA Cup.
The Wings had the perfect start to the game as inside five minutes the Blue Square South side were in the lead. Orlando Smith played in Charlie Sheringham and the striker cut back from the by-line to chip the ball delicately to the far post where Ryan Martin headed home.
Goalkeeper Robert Tolfrey was lucky to remain on the pitch when he clumsily brought down Sheringham outside the box but the referee only deemed the foul a yellow card offence.
Welling took their foot of the gas and allowed the Ryman League Division 1 South side back into the game. Whyteleafe were looking most dangerous from set-pieces and it came as no surprise that they equalised from a free-kick.
The Wings defence were caught napping when Asher Hudson was left unmarked to get the slightest of touches to head home Steve McNamara’s free-kick on 28 minutes.
Welling thought they had regained the lead a minute from the break but the goal was ruled out. In a similar move to Welling’s first goal, Orlando Smith crossed from the by-line to the far post but Chris Nurse was judged to have fouled keeper Tolfrey before heading in.
The Welling players will be more than happy to forget their second half performance, as it was the lower league side that dominated proceedings. Whyteleafe were the side looking most likely to score and if not for saves from Jamie Turner and a last ditch block from Craig Braham-Barrett, Welling would certainly have lost the game.
The homeside did create some chances with substitute Sonny Cobbs firing wide and Ryan Johnson hitting a harmless shot straight at Tolfrey.
As time ticked by the game looked destined for a replay but Welling could have stolen the win with seconds remaining. Substitute Dorian Smith’s cross was met by a diving header from Tony Sinclair but Tolfrey made a brilliant save to deny the defender a late winner.
Welling United now travel to Whyteleafe on Wednesday in the FA Cup Replay.
Come on you Wings!
