Welling United won the Kent Senior Cup by beating Whitstable Town 6-1 at Park View Road. Goals from Sheringham, Protheroe, Hurrell, Johnson and two for Parkinson secured the cup for the Wings.
It was a quick start to the game with both sides showing their attacking intent. However, it was the homeside that took an early lead. Loui Fazackerley was bundled over inside the box and Charlie Sheringham duly dispatched the spot-kick.
Goalkeeper David Wilkinson made two decent saves to deny the Oystermen a quick equaliser but the Wings keeper could do nothing to stop Ian Pulman’s free-kick from drawing the visitors level. Pulman hit a 20-yard free-kick straight into the back of the net and the goal was no less than Whitstable deserved.
Nevertheless, just a couple of minutes later the Wings were back in front. Jack Parkinson made it 2-1 when he managed to slide the ball into the near post past Kevin Fewell.
Within ten minutes later Welling were 3-1 up. Lee Protheroe fired in a 30-yard drive that flew into the top corner and left Fewell helpless in the Whitstable goal.
Wilkinson had to make another fine save to Dave Cory from pulling one back before the break when the keeper made a low one handed save.
Into the second half and the Wings put the game out of reach. Sam Hurrell was the scorer when the young midfielder smashed the ball home from close range.
Jake Gess hit the woodwork shortly after but Welling added a further goal six minutes past the hour mark. On the edge of the box, Sheringham coolly played in Johnson who put the ball past Fewell with a low clinical finish.
At the second attempt Parkinson secured his brace for the evening when the Welling number 3 slotted underneath the Whitstable goalkeeper.
After the fulltime whistle both teams were given their much-deserved appreciation and the Wings lifted the Kent Senior Cup for the third time in their history.
Next up Welling travel to Weston-super-Mare on Saturday in Blue Square South action.
Come on you Wings!
