Welling United drew 1-1 with Team Bath in a closely fought match at Park View Road on Tuesday.

The game was one of few chances with the only notable action in the first quarter of an hour falling to Delando Smith. A left wing free-kick was swung into the box and cleared as far as Smith who’s resulting shot was saved low at the far post by Darren Chitty.

Team Bath rarely threatened but the eventually lethal Takumi Ake always looked dangerous on the ball.

With neither side taking control, the most likely route to a goal was going to be from a set piece and that’s exactly what happened 15 minutes in. Another Lee Blackburn free-kick, this time on the right wing, was curled into the box and headed into his own net by Team Bath player Matt Thorne.

It was a fortunate way to take the lead but they all count and Wings Boss Andy Ford would have been more than happy to go in at the break 1-0 up.

The second half continued much in the same vain as the first with very few opportunities.

Half chances for Loui Fazackerley and Charlie Sheringham came and went. As time ticked by the home crowd could sense the anxiety in their side whilst Team Bath grew in confidence.

With such a slender lead it was always going to be tough for the Wings to defend it and despite holding up well, it was all undone by a moment of brilliance.

On the 78th minute Ake finished off his sublime run with an excellent finish low past Clark Masters.

The Wings huffed and puffed late on via set pieces but in truth a draw was a fair result.

Next up, Welling travel to Chelmsford City on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

Come on you Wings!
