Welling United lost the final game of the 2008-09 season at home to Newport County on Saturday. Two second-half goals from Sam Foley was enough to secure the rejuvenated County a top 10 finish. The Wings finished the campaign in 7th position.

Welling's only real chance of the match came three minutes into the game. The head of Tony Sinclair met Loui Fazackerley’s corner but the Newport defence was on hand to clear off the line and away to safety.

From here on in it was one-way traffic, as County dominated the game. The Wings had David Wilkinson to thank for keeping his side in the match when the goalkeeper made some stunning saves to thwart Danny Rose and Paul Cochlin.

The Wings were reduced to long-range efforts with Sanchez Ming firing harmlessly wide before the referee blew for half-time.

Into the second-half and the visitors continued to play with purpose and conviction with the homeside rarely troubling Glyn Thompson.

It came as no surprise when the Exiles took a deserved lead on 61 minutes. A short passing move between Craig Reid and Sam Foley on the edge of the box, allowed the latter to strike low past Wilkinson into the bottom corner.

The Wings should have equalised soon after when a poor County clearance bounced off Rob Quinn and into the path of Charlie Sheringham but unfortunately the striker fired wide.

The game was wrapped up for the visitors when Sam Foley secured his brace of the afternoon on 79 minutes. His long range free-kick eluded the diving Wilkinson and into the back of the net.

Thank you for your support during this Blue Square South campaign and we all look forward to seeing you when the pre-season kicks in during the summer.

Come on you Wings!

Extracts from Interview:

"We have put in some good shifts recently but today for some reason we didn't perform, we made them look a good side and they were the better side. Having said that, it’s been a long season and I've enjoyed working with them (players). I have made my mind up about a couple of the lads today but disappointing overall.

That’s the way it should be. There is no way we should have been going into today’s game thinking we still had a chance (of the playoffs). The planning for it wasn't in place, we weren’t expecting it. I think that was probably the right decision."
