Welling United drew 1-1 with Maidenhead United in a stalemate at Park View Road on a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon. It was 5th v 6th in a clash between two play-off hopefuls but it was far from a classic encounter and the game will not live long in the memory.

The Magpies gave the Wings an early scare a few minutes in when Dale Binns fired narrowly wide of the post. However, this would be the only real chance Maidenhead would create in the first period as Welling completely dominated the rest of the half.

Sonny Cobbs had a left-foot shot well saved by Shane Gore 20 minutes in and then some good work from Charlie Sheringham set-up the corner that lead to the opening goal. Lee Blackburn swung the set piece in where it was met by the head of Jack Parkinson before being bundled home by Wings top scorer Sheringham.

Sanchez Ming should have doubled his sides lead ten minutes later when he found himself free inside the area but dragged his shot wide.

Just as it looked like Welling would go in at half-time with the lead, Richard Pacquette popped up to draw Maidenhead level. The Wings defence just stood and watched as Ashley Smith crossed low for Pacquette to turn in the simplest of finishes.

The second period lacked goal scoring opportunities but not controversy. After a brilliant Ming effort flew agonisingly wide, the Wings would have a number of penalty appeals turned down. The first saw substitute Richard Stevens bundled over before Lee Blackburn was chopped down just inside the area. Much to the annoyance of the home crowd the referee waved play on in both instances.

With ten minutes remaining Welling went in a desperate search of a winner. However, the only notable chance was a smart shot from Charlie Sheringham that comfortably fell into the hands of Gore in the Magpies goal.

As decisions seemingly went against the homeside, the frustration of Wings manager Andy Ford was clear to see and he was subsequently sent to the stands for protesting.

Maidenhead were deficient of any form of creativity and were more than happy to hear the final whistle.

Next up, Welling travel to Croydon Athletic in the London Senior Cup on Tuesday, kick-off at 7:45pm.

Come on you Wings!

Extracts from Interview:

"Massively disappointing, I thought it was two poor teams out there today. No disrespect to them but they were a poor team. Having said that we must have been worse because we could not undo them. Parts in the first half we were ok, Sanchez came into the game quite well but disappointed about the goal. We can’t seem to defend and keep a clean sheet at the moment.

Moses (Ademola) should hopefully be back with us on Monday and I think we have missed him big time. I have never been sent-off in my life, so you can sense my frustration. Very unhappy with his (Orlando Smith's) performance."
