Welling United won 3-2 at home to Eastleigh on Saturday afternoon with former Spitfires striker James Baker netting a brace and Jerome Anderson getting the other. After a brilliant first half display from the Wings, the second period would prove to be much tougher as Eastleigh went close to snatching an undeserved point.
Welling were quick out of the blocks and it took only 12 minutes before they were in front. A low right-wing cross from Loui Fazakerley was met by James Baker who prodded the ball in from close range.
Ryan Johnson almost doubled his sides lead moments later. As on 16 minutes the defender unleashed a pile driver from outside of the box but the shot flew just over.
Jamie Turner needed to be alert to save Tony Taggart's header and then from the resulting corner came out quick to cut down the angle, forcing Peter Adeniyi to shoot wide.
Loui Fazakerley was involved in almost every Welling attack and 31 minutes in, his teasing cross was missed by the diving head of Charlie Sheringham by just inches.
Fazakerley had a chance of his own three minutes later, when through one on one the attacking midfielder dragged wide.
Nevertheless, the Wings doubled their lead just nine minutes before the break. A quick free-kick from Sonny Cobbs played in Fazakerley, who crossed for Baker to head the ball home for his and Welling's second.
Adeniyi had the final chance of the half when the former Bromley man hit the side netting after running straight through the Wings defence.
Into the second half and Welling picked up where they left off as they continued to create chances. Five minutes after the restart Sheringham found himself through on goal but the striker's weak chip fell harmlessly into the arms of Spitfires keeper Jason Matthews.
Yet this would prove to be Welling's only goal scoring opportunity for sometime as they found themselves on the back foot for the majority of the half. Eastleigh looked rejuvenated and it came as no surprise when they pulled one back on 65 minutes. A low left-wing cross was bundled home by Andy Forbes with the Wings defence left flat-footed.
Seconds later Sanchez Ming had to make an excellent last-ditch tackle to deny Spitfires drawing level.
As Eastleigh pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they were caught out at the back on 86 minutes. Jermoe Anderson was sent clear on goal and the on-loan striker chipped the ball delicately over the head of Matthews to make it 3-1.
The Spitfires made it a nervous last few minutes for the home crowd when Forbes pulled one back late on but the Wings held on to the three points, moving them to seventh in the league table.
Next up on Tuesday, Welling weclome Sittingbourne to Park View Road in the Kent Senior Cup.
Come on you Wings!
