Welling United handed Bath City their first away league defeat since late October with a 2-1 win at Park View Road. Charlie Sheringham gave the Wings the lead before Loui Fazackerley doubled it by scoring a stunning goal. Matt Coupe pulled one back for the visitors but the homeside held onto the deserved three points.
The Wings dominated the early proccedings but failed to create any chances. It was Bath City that nearly took the lead against the run of play. A long range and speculative effort from Richard Evans almost caught out Clark Masters but the goalkeeper managed to put the ball wide.
However, despite this early scare, the homeside didn't have too long to wait before taking the lead. Brilliant work from Moses Ademola allowed the striker to play in Charlie Sheringham, who slotted the ball past Steve Perrin.
Eight minutes later and the Wings were two up. A free-kick from Sonny Cobbs was headed down by Sheringham into the path of Loui Fazackerley who controlled the ball and then volleyed it home, with goalkeeper Perrin just watching it fly past into the net.
Bath should have scored five minutes later, when Dave Gilroy was left unmarked but the striker headed wide from Lewis Hogg's delicate cross.
After the break and the second half continued to be an open game. However, this time round Bath City were the side creating all the goal-scoring opportunities.
After Lee Protheroe had a free-kick well saved, it would be one way traffic as the Romans went in search of a way back into the match.
On the hour mark, Clark Masters made a superb save to deny substitute Stuart Douglas from scoring when one on one.
Nevertheless, there was nothing the young goalkeeper could do to stop the visitors pulling one back four minutes later. Richard Evans's deflected free-kick crashed back of the bar and to the feet of Matt Coupe who smashed the ball in to make it 2-1.
Welling could have avoided the anxious finish to the game had they taken their chances in the last quarter of an hour. Sheringham lobbed wide when through on goal before Fazackerley somehow fired over with an open goal in front of him. Fortunately for the Wings they held on for the victory and are now three points off a play-off place.
Next up, Welling travel to Bromley on Boxing Day with kick-off at 1:00pm.
Come on you Wings and a Merry Christmas to all!
