Welling United twice came from behind to secure a point in a 2-2 draw against promotion hopefuls AFC Wimbledon at Park View Road on Saturday. Jon Main gave the visitors an early lead before Charlie Sheringham equalised on 23 minutes. The Dons quickly restored their advantage a minute later via Ben Judge but Sheringham would pop up again 6 minutes into the second half to deservedly draw level.
The game started at a frenetic pace and it looked clear both sides were not going to hold back. The first chance of the match fell to Sonny Cobbs just four minutes in. A short Welling corner was played to Ryan Johnson who set-up Cobbs to hit a vicious shot, forcing Andy Little into an excellent save.
However, despite this positive start from the Wings, they would find themselves 1-0 down two minutes later. Jon Main hit what looked to be a harmless shot from outside the area but keeper Jamie Turner misjudged the effort and the ball rolled in at the near post.
Former Welling man Danny Kedwell should have then doubled the Dons lead on 12 minutes. The striker skipped past Matthew McEntegart but dragged his shot wide from close range.
Disappointed with their FA Cup exit AFC Wimbledon looked to be back on form as the continued to look dangerous on the attack. Kedwell was inches away from scoring his 5th of the season for the Dons when the striker headed agonisingly wide of the post.
Nevertheless, even under this pressure Welling were not going to give up and Andy Ford's side forced their way back into the game with an equaliser. A deep Lee Blackburn free-kick eventually found its way to Charlie Sheringham who prodded the ball past the floored Andy Little.
It only took AFC Wimbledon 60 seconds to retake the lead as Welling were caught asleep at the back. Chris Hussey's free-kick was swung in for the tall Ben Judge to poke the ball home.
Main should have scored his second of the afternoon and AFC Wimbledon's third just before the break. The striker picked up Tony Sinclair's short back header and chipped the ball over the on rushing Turner but his effort crashed off the bar and away to safety.
Into the second half and Ford's team talk did wonders as the homeside drew level on 51 minutes. Blackburn's free-kick was met by the head of Sheringham who scored his sixth of the season.
The Dons huffed and puffed without creating any clear goal scoring opportunities and as time wore on Welling were looking the more confident side. Blackburn and Loui Fazakerley were causing the AFC Wimbledon defence numerous problems and the pair both went close to snatching a winner.
Tony Sinclair and Turner did enough to stop Kedwell from scoring late on as the game finished 2-2 with both sides sharing the points in an entertaining game.
Welling welcome AFC Totton to Park View Road next Saturday in the FA Trophy, kick-off 3:00pm.

Extracts from Interview:
"Really we were looking for three points today, which says a lot about us at the moment. If we can compete with the clubs like AFC Wimbledon then we are on the right road. Disappointed with the goals, obviously Jamie won't be too happy with the first one. We started quite brightly. Coming from behind twice shows a lot of character and something we are building on.
It goes without saying they have got the money etc and they should be up there. I love playing against teams like that; it gives me great pride and pleasure when we come up against them, we were the underdogs."
