Welling United picked up their first league win at Park View Road since November with a 2-1 victory over Weston-super-Mare. Both sides were reduced to ten men after Weston goalkeeper Ryan Northmore was sent off and Sonny Cobbs was later dismissed. Richard Carpenter scored a spot-kick to give Welling the lead but Weston soon equalised through Lewis Powell. Nevertheless, a quick second half goal from Sam Gargan secured the three points for the homeside.
The Wings could have been in front within 15 seconds of kick-off. A long ball from Robbie Ryan found Sam Gargan, who fired just inches wide. Moments later Orlando Smith then struck narrowly over from outside the box.
19 minutes into the match and Gargan again went close. The loan striker's looping header was tipped over the bar. Six minutes later, the Wings were awarded a penalty and Weston were down to ten men. Gargan was brought down in the box by Weston keeper Ryan Northmore after the young striker met Stephen Williams' long kick. The referee was quick to point to the spot and Northmore was given his marching orders. Richard Carpenter stepped up and slotted the ball home.
Despite being down to ten men, the remainder of the first half was dominated by Weston. They deservedly drew level seven minutes before the break when Lewis Powell hit a low shot past Williams.
Six minutes into the second period and Welling regained the lead. A good ball from Ellis Green was picked up by Gargan who scored with a clinical finish. The Wings had further chances to kill the game off but both Smith and Sonny Cobbs could not capitalise on some poor defending.
However, the Wings themselves were soon down to ten men. Cobbs was shown his second yellow after a challenge on Andy Robertson.
With time ticking away, Williams was called into action and the new signing had to make two excellent saves to deny Weston an equaliser. Nevertheless, Welling held on and picked up all three points.
Welling travel to Newport County on Wednesday, kick-off 7.45pm.

Extracts from Interview:
"It was definitely a must win game, but we should have made it much more easier than it was. With the sending off of their goalkeeper and going 1-0 up, we should have taken the initiative and hammered them into the ground. Unfortunately, we sat back from some reason, which I am trying to sort out and let them come onto us. I wasn't overly pleased with the performance today but the three points are more important.
St. Albans are on a bit of a roll at the moment, so we perhaps have to look at another team who will be dragged into it i.e. Weston. But it was a must win and we go onto the next game."
