Welling United and Boss Neil Smith were again left wondering how they did not secure all three points when the Wings drew 2-2 at home to Thurrock on Saturday. Numerous chances were all squandered by the homeside, including two efforts hitting the bar and missing a penalty kick. Che Stadhart gave Thurrock the lead 16 minutes in before two minutes later Ellis Remy equalised for the Wings. Orlando Smith then put Welling in front but a late goal from Michael Malcolm meant both sides shared the points.

An open start to the game saw Richard Carpenter go close while at the other end former Wings striker Che Stadhart lobbed just over the bar. However, the Wings defence were caught napping on 16 minutes when Stadhart was allowed to head home unchallenged from Matt Bodkin's cross.

Nevertheless, the Wings found an immediate reply to draw level. Ellis Green's cross was cleared to the feet of Ellis Remy, who then smashed the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Just five minutes later and Welling took the lead. A quick Carpenter free-kick found Orlando Smith unmarked at the far post and the winger fired home with a smart finish.

The Wings should have made it 3-1 five minutes before the break when Neil Smith headed against the bar before moments later Remy headed wide.

After the break and the game continued where it left off with end-to-end action. Remy was through on goal on 57 minutes but his low shot was saved by the legs of David Blackmore.

Minutes later and it was the turning point of the game. Defender John Wilfort had his shot rattle the bar and the resulting loose ball saw Remy's shot handled by Matt Paine. Referee Rowley awarded a penalty but Blackmore saved Ellis Green’s spot-kick.

These wasted opportunities gave Thurrock the chance to get back into the game, which is exactly what the visitors did. Thurrock substitute Michael Malcolm's shot took a deflection off Sam Keevill before finding it's way past Jamie Turner to make it 2-2.

Both sides had further chances to snatch a late winner but poor finishing and good goalkeeping meant the game ended all square.

Welling will be looking for revenge against Fisher Athletic when they travel to Champion Hill Stadium on New Year's Day.

Come on you Wings!

Extracts from Interview:

"We hit the bar twice, one on ones, another penalty and we come off with only a point. I have tried to lift the boys, they were walking around with their heads down but the pleasing aspect was the force going forward. Mucu (Orlando Smith) was superb, its great to have him back and when he is on that form he is going to cause problems. I think the football was good to watch but we have only come away with a point, which is very disappointing.

We still wanted to go out and score 3,4,5,6 goals but when it comes to the last ten minutes it’s about getting the three points. Sometimes you need to do the ugly stuff to get the three points. I know the frustration of the supporters; the support during the game was superb. The boys were a bit anxious because they did not want to make mistakes. I know the supporters are not getting on the players back but on mine. If they can just give the young guys every bit of support, like they have, then I think we will turn that corner.
