After Saturday's draw against Dorchester Town the Wings were quickly back in action against Thurrock on Bank Holiday Monday. However, despite the glorious sunshine it was a far from perfect day for Neil Smith and Welling United. The visitors lost 2-0 via goals from Wesley Thomas's first half spot-kick and Leon McKenzie's second half tap-in.

Wings Boss Smith will be left wondering how his side got nothing from the game after outplaying Thurrock throughout the first period. Orlando Smith had the first chance for the Wings, hitting a low shot wide of the left post.

Possibly the best opportunity of the match came on 20 minutes. The impressive Omari Coleman had an effort parried to the feet of Adam Cottrell, who from just yards out couldn't get his shot away with the keeper Shane Gore most certainly stranded.

11 minutes later and the Wings again went close. Michael Johnson crossed for Coleman who headed over at the far post. Chris Moore then also headed over before, against the run of play, Thurrock took the lead in controversial circumstances.

Much to the surprise of both teams a penalty was awarded for an alleged shirt-pull given against Tony Sinclair. After the confusion had settled Wesley Thomas stepped up and slotted home on the stroke of half time.

After the restart and Welling quickly created a chance to equalise when Coleman had a shot cleared agonisingly near the line. It just wasn't going to be Welling's day and things quickly turned from bad to worse when Thurrock went two up. Confusion in the Wings defence saw a low cross elude Jamie Turner and allow Leon McKenzie to prod home from close range.

With Thurrock content with 2-0, the game petered out and the Wings just couldn't fashion a response.

Next up Welling welcome second place Bath City to Park View Road on Saturday.

Come on you Wings!
