Welling United lost 2-1 to Newport County at Park View Road on Tuesday evening. Jason Bowen gave the visitors the lead from the spot after Chris Moore handled in the box. Paul Cochlin doubled Newport's lead on 28 minutes before Sam Gargan pulled one back for the homeside. Despite dominating the second period the Wings just could not find an equaliser and are without a win in three games.
Newport started the brighter of the two sides and quickly forced Jamie Turner into an excellent save after just 3 minutes. Turner tipped the ball round the post from a Craig Hughes low shot.
Just 15 minutes into the game and the Exiles were in front. A long ball was handled in the box by Chris Moore and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Jason Bowen calmly stepped up and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
After going behind, the Wings finally started to create some opportunities. Orlando Smith had a looping header well saved before just yards from goal Sam Gargan couldn't quite reach a low cross from Ellis Green.
However, Welling's failure to take their chances would eventually cost them. A defensive mix-up from the Wings allowed Paul Cochlin to head in an Andy Gurney set piece and make it 2-0.
Nevertheless, Welling pushed forward and pulled one goal back. Green crossed in a short corner from Richard Carpenter, allowing Gargan to bundle the ball over the line.
The Wings did have one final chance before the break when Green fired just wide.
The homeside dominated the second period and should really have drawn level. The first came just a minute after the restart when there was no one in the box to get on the end of Amos Foyewa's byline cross.
Substitute Michael Boakye couldn't quite get his shot away when through on goal before Ohran Stewart had a header saved.
The best chance of the second half came late in the game when unmarked inside the box Boakye headed over.
Despite riding their luck for most of the second period, Newport County were able to hang on and secure a much-needed three points for their promotion push.
Welling welcome Hampton & Richmond to Park View Road on Saturday, kick-off 3.00 pm.
Come on you Wings!
