On the back of Welling's first win at Park View Road of the new campaign, the Wings faced league leaders Lewes on Friday evening. Previously, the Wings had failed to win in three meetings at the Dripping Pan, however, this has now been extended to four after the Rooks won 2-0.
It was the worse possible start for the Wings after the homeside were awarded a penalty just three minutes in. Leon Solomon was alleged to have committed a foul on Kirk Watts inside the box but there seemed to be very little contact. Even so former Wings striker Paul Booth stepped up and slotted home past Clark Masters.
Perhaps Welling's best and only real chance of the match came four minutes later. Omari Coleman did well to beat the Lewes defence but fired over when through on goal.
Chances throughout the game were limited, Booth had a free-kick well saved on 38 minutes then Richard Carpenter fired wide two minutes later.
Into the second period and it was at least 25 minutes before either side even saw a glimpse of goal. A half chance saw Coleman shoot over before Lewes wrapped the game up on 72 minutes. Masters made a brilliant save to deny Booth but Andy Drury was there to pick up the pieces and prod the ball into an open net.
Just before the final whistle Booth should have scored his second and made it 3-0 but the striker headed wide. Nevertheless, Lewes comfortably saw the game out and consolidated their place at the top of the table.
Despite being solid at the back manager Neil Smith will be disappointed his side could not muster a single shot on target.
Welling welcome Hayes & Yeading to Park View Road on Saturday, hoping of a repeat of the result from earlier in the season when the Wings won 1-0.
Come on you Wings!
