Omari Coleman went close just a minute in, when the striker had a low strike saved by Delroy Preddie. Three minutes later and Welling should have been in front. Lloyd Blackman's pass found Coleman but the striker fired his shot over when he should have done better.
Former Wings player Steve Perkins had an effort comfortably saved by Clark Masters before Will Hendry had an excellent opportunity to give his side the lead. A cross from Danny Allen-Page found Hendry unmarked but the midfielder could only manage to head straight at Masters.
The visitors were creating an abundance of chances, Steven Gregory headed wide and Hendry shot over. However, against the run of play and Welling took a surprising lead. An inch perfect ball from Daniel Maxwell allowed Coleman to run rings round the Hayes & Yeading defence before unleashing a low striker past Preddie into the back of the net.
The second half was a disastrous one for Neil Smith and his Welling side. Just five minutes after the restart and the visitors were level. Gregory's cross-found Hendry whose shot seemed to take a deflection off Tony Sinclair before hitting the back of the net.
Two minutes later and Hayes & Yeading were in front with a stunning goal. Gregory picked up the ball from all of 30 yards before unleashing a volley past the helpless Masters.
Welling could not fashion a response and it looked more likely that the visitors would score again. Masters made a superb reaction save to deny Miles Jones from close range.
Half chances were the most the Wings could create, with Hayes & Yeading more than happy to play out the rest of the match.
Welling travel to second place Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday, a side yet to be defeated this season.

Extracts from Interview:
"Very disappointed, we had the chances in the first half. The second half was very poor, the boys had given up, they scored two goals, the second was a great strike but the way we performed after that was shocking, individually, collectively and as a team. I take full responsibility as a manager but I cannot have that.
You come in at 1-0 up and we should be better, I still wasn't happy. Took myself off to give a bit of fresh legs and to really go for it and kill the game off. It didn't work and I said to the boys I'm not going to stand for that. The crowd were right to show their frustration and in the end we didn't give everything we had."
