Welling United and Boss Neil Smith won their first game of the new season with a 1-0 victory at Hayes & Yeading on Saturday. Omari Coleman slotted home in the 83rd minute, bagging three points and a deserved confidence boost for the Wings.

Like the Wings, Hayes & Yeading were looking for their first win of the new campaign and the homeside certainly had a number of chances to secure a victory. Within the first minute Liam Collins could have given his side the lead but the midfielder dragged his shot wide.

The first half only saw two real chances from Welling. The first of these came in the 22nd minute when Michael Johnson had an effort comfortably saved by John Peacock. The Wings second came just minutes later when Lloyd Blackman fired wide from just outside the box.

Jamie Turner then made a fine save to deny Stafforde Palmer when on 35 minutes Turner tipped Palmer's low effort round the post. The Wings number 1 would again have to be called into action when the homeside were awarded a penalty four minutes before the break. Defender Tony Sinclair brought down Palmer just inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Fortunately for the visitors a poorly taken penalty and sound concentration from Turner saw the spot-kick parried.

After the break saw a more confident display from the Wings, creating far more chances than in the first 45. Just 8 minutes into the second periond and Welling should have been in front. Some fine play from Omari Coleman allowed the striker to pull the ball back for Sam Keevil but with the goal at his mercy the midfielder fired straight at keeper Peacock.

Welling continued to press and Peacock again denied Blackman, when his curling effort was well saved. Jamie Turner then made a superb save on 67 minutes when the keeper tipped over James Edgerley's long-range strike. At the other end Nick Ward had an opportunity to put the Wings 1 up but his shot was also saved.

It was then the turn of Peacock to produce a stunning save when the former Uxbridge man pushed Richard Carpenter's free-kick wide. It was Welling that made the break through and got the eventual winner on 83 minutes. Jamie Turner's kick was flicked on by Ward into the path of Coleman who rounded the keeper and slotted home from a tight angle.

Five minutes before the final whistle a melee ensued when Kieran Knight was sent off for a bad challenge on Welling's Seb Schoburgh. Nevertheless the Wings played out the rest of the match, sending Welling United, Neil Smith and the fans home happy with their first win of the new Blue Square South season.

Come on you Wings!
